Started the car and, just as before, it is charging the battery @11.9 volts, like the car's voltmeter reads. The shop that rebuilt the Bosch unit is reputable, so I think the problem lies elsewhere. Is there some resistor or something that is prone to wear out that can cause this? Tomorrow I'll have the alt tested at a parts house to see what the amperage is. Any help/advice would be greatly appreciated, as I'm dying to drive the car on a daily basis. Man I need to get a shop manual.

The alternator circuit is very simple. The internal voltage regulator needs to receive power from the ignition switch thru the warning lamp. I assume that the warning light for the alt comes on with the key on?? If not, it won't charge. If it doesn't come on, remove the small wire from the alt, and ground it... if the light comes on then, the problem is in the alternator/regulator.
If it doesn't come on, you will have to trace the warning lamp circuit.
The output circuit of the alternator is from the output post, thru the heavy wire to the top terminal of the starter solenoid to the very heavy wire back to the positive post of the battery. The ground circuit is thru the ground strap on the trans to the car body and the ground strap in the front trunk to the negative battery terminal.
First check the warning lamp operation as described. If it doesn't work properly the alt won't charge. If it does work ok, then measure the voltage between the output terminal of the alt and the case of the alt with the car running.
If it is 13.8V or greater, then you have a voltage drop on the output circuit.. let us know what you find,

The car's voltmeter is accurate and the red light is on all the time, as it should be. The tranny groundstrap is on, although it is obviously original and I may change it. When I put a voltmeter between the alt output wire (big one going to starter I assume) and the alt case it read .2 volts. The other wire is black w/purple stripe and reads nothing when grounded to the case. I may just take the car to the shop that rebuilt the alt if a new groundstrap does nothing. There's a Italian/British car rallye tomorrow that I may just have to drive my Triumph in, but would really like to unveil the X. Again, thanks for your help.

The voltage between the output stud and the case with with motor running should be 13.8V at least.
Grounding the wire from the warning light is only to test the circuit. If the light comes on, there is no point in doing that test.
If the light comes on with the key on, doesn't go out when the motor exceeds 1500 RPM, and you have only .2V between the output stud and the case, then you need to talk with the folks who rebuilt your alternator! Good luck,

The primary lead which goes down to the starter should have full battery voltage at all times, even when the car is off. That lead goes to the main starter lead, which then has that big green lead straight to the battery. Maybe the lead from the alt somehow broke off the starter lug?<!-- google_ad_section_end -->

I think I may have something screwed up here, because I did change the starter recently. I can't remeber if the car was having a charging problem before I changed the starter because I only drove it a few miles before getting it home and removing the starter. It was after I installed (incorrectly?) the starter that I noticed the low voltmeter. Thanks for the help.

The big stud on the starter should have two wires bolted to it - the fat green one from the battery and the same one you have connected to the primary of the alternator (which my book shows as black). There's a total of 3 wires on the starter, the two I just described that go under the big nut and one that is a quick-disconnect that actuates the solenoid.<!-- google_ad_section_end -->

You can physically trace the alternators output wire from the back of the alternator(heavy black wire) to where it attaches on the TOP starter solenoid terminal. The very heavy black wire from the battery also attaches there. (and it has to be hooked up or the car wouldn't crank). Good luck,

I don't know why I didn't realize that the alt output wire and the battery wire both go to the same terminal on the starter. Now I have 13.9 volts going to the battery (still going to replace that ground strap) and all I have to do is fix a minor fuel leak to be in business!

Many thanks to everyone who helped, especially both Steves. Without you guys posting I may have had to tow the car to a shop ($$). Plus, this way I learned something. This is what this forum is all about!

I got an X1/9 Bertone from a friend of mine.
BUT!!!!
He butchered the wiring in it. The car sat for about two years and he was going to scrap it.
I took it off his hands and towed it home, I put a new battery in it and of cours most of the lights need changing but they may even be ground faults like you guys were talking about. Anyways, do you guys recomend that I start from scratch and check everything, maybe even replace the majority of it if not everything or do you think I should just try to fix whats broke?

Your advise would be greatly appreciated.
