Anyway, I am going to take the plunge and do it - probably this weekend. The one thing that isn't clear to me from the manual is how to find top dead center on the car. On the old domestic flatheads I am used to working on, it's really easy to tell with the valvae covers off... but I don't see that as being an easy option here.

From the way you guys have made it sound, this is not a terribly difficult project, so I figure there must be an easier way to find TDC. Please advise!

PS: started stripping the car down to bare metal for it's restoration... the metal is in better shape than I could have hoped for (though I did find a dent on the hood that had been bondo'ed... probably at the factory, as the paint looked original).

There are 2 pointers for TDC.
The most accurate is the one on the left side of the engine (well, left side of the car). It is a window in the bellhousing just where it attaches to the engine block. It is hard to see though. You may have to remove the overflow tank. (maybe more on your FI car).

The easier pointer to work with is the one on the yellow timing cover. There are some lines on the yellow cover and a notch on the crankshaft pulley. Your manual explains which line is what.
I would undo the engine lid prop so that you can open the lid all the way to the targa bar.
To get a good look at the marks, you need to look down from the front right corner of the engine compartment.

About your body resto, it rarely happens that one finds less rust than expected, so congrats!

Not to contradict Ulix, but... If your car is an injected 1500 then there are no lines on the timing cover. Instead, there is a little metal tab, with 3 pointers on it, just above the crankshaft pully. The largest of the three pointers is the TDC pointer. Line up the notch in the pully with the largest of the pointers and then compare it to the mark on the bellhousing window. This is important because the little tab is "adjustable". It is secured by two nuts and its mounts are slotted for adjustment.

The easiest way to spot the tab is with a flashlight looking down over the water pump pully.

Also, remember to check the cam timing since you can have the crank at TDC and the cam 180 degrees out. There is a notch on the back side of the cam pully that lines up with a pointer on the backing plate of the belt cover.

To Ulix's credit the 1300 has the lines/marks on the timing belt cover.

My problem is that it's been so long that I've owned a FI car that I can't remember.

I have a later timing cover that I thought was from a FI car (small cover, no air pump) and has some lines on it.

I got the top two screws out, and with some difficulty also removed the one in the middle with the spacer. I can't see or feel and other bolts holding this in, but the cover won't come off! Help please!

Also, how important is it to put the cover back on? Seems like mroe trouble than it is worth.

Do put the cover back on. I changed some fuel line and left an old small hose clamp behind in the engine compartment. When I drove off, it fell down inbetween the belt and pulley. It got mangled and ripped halfway through the belt!

The cover is a 2 piece cover, an upper and a lower. There are 2 bolts at the top that hold the top cover in place. The bolt in the middle holds BOTH the top and bottom covers. Then there is a bolt down low that holds the bottom cover.

Note that the top and bottom covers are also held together by a metal dowel that is fixed to the bottom cover. The middle bolt goes right through this dowel. If you try to simply pull the top cover up it will be stuck on the dowel. To remove the top cover simply pull the bottm of the cover gently towards the shock tower to get it past the dowel and it'll lift right out.

The bottom cover pulls out through the bottom, not easily, but it does. Just remember that force is not the answer in removing either cover.

First, I have been a little slow to reply in here lately, haven't had much time to get online these days, and just want to thank you all for pitching in on the advice here - most kind!

Now, just a brief note about typographical errors in the factory shop manual in regards to the timing marks on the 1300 belt cover...

Yes, it does, but Backwards! D'oh! Doc, this won't apply to you & your 1500, but I thought I'd mention this for the benefit of those readers with a 1300 and the '74 - '78 Fiat shop manual:

On page 12 of the 1300 manual, it lists the timing marks on the yellow cover backwards! Looking down at the cover from above, the book says that the marks are (left to right) 0°, 5° advance and 10° advance respectively. That is backwards, FYI, they numbered them backwards in the illustration. Really they are (left to right) 10° advance, 5° advance and 0°.
