I'm not sure what a "balancing channel" is... but it sounds like an oriface of some kind was clogged wit crud... true?

That's about right....I think....
Beneath the idle jets and main jets there is about a 3/16 hole that connects the bottom of the fuel bowls at the very bottom. When I cleaned the carb I missed that and I'm pretty sure that's where all the crud was hiding. I put 110 leaded in it for it's initial run but I don't know if that had anything to do with it.

Sounds like that oriface was the cause...
... and it makes sense! Its also why these things usually need to soak in acid for a good while in order to clear these problems too.
As for the 110 octane... that was just an expense! No super cleaners there.
