The story is thus: The Alfa, despite its exhaust leak, bum 2nd gear synchro and toasted engine mouunts, had been running like the proverbial champ. It has been getting passed around between Holly & I and pulling lots of drive time between my work, her school, home, various auto parts establishments
etc. All was well until EARTHQUAKE DAY!!
In hindsight, the timing was probably just a unique coincidence, but it was uncanny. Holly was at home, sitting in the Alfa, preparing to start the engine. The car always starts, but when cold often needs to be turned over a few times before firing up. She cranked it a couple times and it didn't start, which was not too unusual for first run of the day. Third time is often the charm but the minute she released the key from the 2nd try, the earthquake hit! She was quite surprised at that moment to have the whole car start bouncing and jumping around wildly! She thought for a moment that this car was surely posessed
From that moment forward the Alfa has not run again! It would merely fire over for a second and stall out. Unfortunately we have not had any real opportunity to dig into the thing since, and were not certain where or what to look for (what do you suppose the earthquake broke hmmn?) ...
Well, during Ulix's Sendoff bash at my house, Ken Stixrud (owner of the drop-dead gorgeous white Scorp/Monte) and Steven Ambrose (owner of the orange bumperless 1500 X and of Import Auto Tech in Redmond) could not help themselves but to take a poke under the hood of the Alfa. Actually, the Alfa got a good bit of attention from the party-goers, it is a cool ol thing
We cranked it over a few times, all huddling around the open engine bay and within a matter of minutes, Steven proclaimed, "FOUND YOUR PROBLEM!"
It turned out to be a cheap looking little old plastic ball-and-socket type throttle linkage rod end that had broken in two and allowed a throttle rod to come loose. Thanks to the efforts of these great folks, I was today able to fashion a makeshift linkage from a couple pieces of plumber's tape and a ziptie
and the Alfa is back on the road ready to kick some butt!
PS, that "junkyard wars" throttle linkage is not going to be permanent folks! I still need to source the actual part, I'm going to do it right, but this puts the car back in the pool of driveables until I can get that rod end. Just wanted to say how grateful Holly and I are for the help guys
who knows how long we'd have stood there scratching our noggins and pondering what the earthquake broke
