but the cap and wires were off and I am not convinced the distributor was in the right spot. (first of many problems)

Could someone tell me what position the vacuum housing sits at (if the front of the car is 12 o'clock). Also the cap has all four wires coming straight out to the left side of the car... which of the four is for the number one spark plug... and which cylinder is number one....

(sorry my repair manual didn't help me on these)

First you need to turn the motor over untill the cam timing mark is aligned with the pointer and the crank should be at the 0 mark at this time. The pointer for the cam is on the back side of the cam pulley, the sheet metal that supports the timing belt cover. You'll see it on top. Put the car in 4th gear and push it slowly 'till this mark lines up. At that point the crank should be at the most clockwise mark on the timing tab (0). The car is now set up to be firing on #4 (yes, #4). The normal position for the vacuum advance unit is approx 2 o'clock. What is more important, is that with the cap off, you see that the 4 points of the reluctor in the dist are lined up with(or very slightly clockwise of) their matching stationary pole pieces in the dist body. This would mean that the distributor is signaling the module to fire the coil. Assuming that all this lines up as I've explained, the next thing is to make sure the rotor send that spark to the correct plug(#4). The firing order is 1-3-4-2 The cap is a confusing style, but if you examine it closely you will see where the plug leads go to the contacts in the cap. The dist rotates clockwise. The contact in alignment with the rotor now is #4, as the dist rotates the next plug(clockwise) will be #2.. carefully locate and trace this in the cap. Next is #1, then #3.
Lets back up to the step where cam and crank were in alignment.. If the reluctor is NOT closely aligned as described, you can loosen and rotate the dist body for small adjustments. If it's quite a ways off, remove the clamp, lift up the dist, and turn the rotor to align the reluctor, and plop the dist back in place.
Finally finish up with a timing light. At idle, using either #1 or #4 plug and the crank timing marks your timing should be at the 10 degree mark. Loosen and rotate the body as needed. A lot of words, but really quite easy.. the main points are: cam mark lined up means firing on #4, reluctor aligned with or slightly clockwise of pole piece means approx 10 degrees, whatever contact the rotor points at means "tag, you're #4", study the confusing cap, and you can't go wrong. How about the cylinder numbering convention - 'number four cylinder is closest to the tranny'. Pretty obvious, right ?

Hey, pointing to number four for their indexing of the pulleys they COULD have identified either end as being number one ! lolololol Who knows.

Tony points out that at runup to 3000-3500rpm the timing should advance to around 20 degrees...

I'm unfamiliar with the particulars of a Strada distributor... if there are any differences... but by disconnecting and plugging the vacuum hose to the distributor... I can see that the static timing at idle is at 10 BTDC, the centrifical moves it to about 20 BTDC at 2500 or so, and re-attaching the vacuum hose moves it to 30 - 35 BTDC at 3500 RPM.

You see I just saved up all my lawnmowing money to buy my first car. The X. This driving stuff really has me confused. Studying for my drivers exam has me wondering how everyone remembers all this stuff.

Like...is it "put" on the gas, release the clutch, hands at 10 and 2. Or "put" on the clutch let out the wheel, hands on the gas pedal. Geeze, I don't think I'll ever remember this stuff.
