What is the max width tire that will fit in the stock wheel wells of an x.
Would switching to 60 series affect the spedo. calibration and reading?
Any comments on what would be the best size to provide best gas mileage vs grip. I drive the car over 1000k/week to work and gas mileage is an issue but so is handling since the roads I drive on have lots of sharp corners and I feel the need to pull g's. the 185/60-13 this the ideal compromise tire for the X1/9. Why Fiat/Bertone so long to figure this out I don't know (the last cars came with this size).
This tires size offers so much more road feel than the 175/70s you are using now. I did exactly the same switch on my current car which came with 175/70s. The car will feel much more like a sports car and you will probably have more grip. You will lose a little bit of ride quality, but not much.
Also, the 175/70 has a greater circumference than the stock size. 165/70 and 185/60 are very close to the original 145-13.
Fender clearance depends laregly on your wheel offset since the tightest spot is usually right in front of the front wheels.

I am running them on the front and they fit real good. I am using a stock fiat 13"x5" steel rim with the stock spacer. The front coils have one coil removed to get a better ride height. Here are some measurements I took so you can see how it fits. Tire height = 21". Height from floor to fender well = 22 1/4". Distance the upper part of the tire is inside the fender = 1". With the tire turned, it comes close to the forward edge of the fender, distance = 5/8". I suspect you could go to a 5 1/2" width rim and be OK.
My rears are 185/60 R14, but that is a different story.

Boy what a coincidence all this talk going on while I am out today landing a set of 13" Iron Cross wheels! What's more, I got myself a set of 185/60/13s for these. Wow, you guys are in here basically discussing my day (one aspect of it anyway)...
I got the wheels cheap (!) from a wrecking yard that had several noteworthy Fiats. Sorry though, guys, these were the only full set of wheels they had. They did have a few single wheels of various type, one in particular an unusual Cromadora that I have never seen before. I was wishing they would have had a full set of those!
Anyway, see my other post for more on the day I had scrounging at area junkyards...
As for the tires, I got them at Les Schwab for ~$60 each. They carry Falken and Ohtsu in 185/60/13.
BTW, it's good to see Wayne in here! I hope he makes a habit of it

I have a set of Fondemetal 5.5x13 alloy rims. No interference with front fenders even with car lowered. I also added Bayless anti-roll bars front and rear. I've got too much negative camber in the rear (~-3 degrees), but the car turns in and corners hard! Pirelli P6000 summer tires in 185/60/13 which has a diamater of 21.7 inches $125.00 can. or some B.F. goodrich T.A. 215/50/13 with a tire diamater of 21.5" at about the same price.
The t.a's would take a bigger wheel 6" and I don't know if you could get a wheel to fit.
Does anybody have any experience with the Pirelli tires especially in the rain?
Has anybody ever come across a tire size/diameter/width chart?

185/60/13 will fit the stock wheels. Any wider and the tires will start to bulge like a donut on such narrow rims. Even at 185, Wayne's suggestion of a 55 series tire would probably work, but a 185/55/13 seems even more difficult a size to find (don't know for sure), plus any lower profile will also begin increasing the need for a wider rim...
I say order a set of 185/60/13s from Tirerack.com, or else just get some wider rims and go for something completely different. IMHO. -Mac.

Sure they are something of a 'name brand' but that does not make them anything special.
The Yokohama range was completely rehashed early this year. You can still get intermediates (they have a new code now) and they are certainly among the best value for money considering the extremely good performance they offer - even in the wet, but you're in real trouble if you get caught in a real downpour as they cannot shed as much water as 'proper' road tyres.
I've switched to using Bridgestone tyres last year and they have been absolutely fantastic even in the wet (and we get more than enough of that in the UK).
There is a tyre size calculator on the UK owners club site in the links section - just type in the different tyre sizes you want to compare and it gives you a chart of the diameters.

I took my X1/9 to Seattle this week for a conference, figuring it would be pretty dry until mid-Nov... yeah, right! On Wednesday the storm hit; with snow in the pass. My car is a bit low for snow, so I opted to head south down 1-5 and drive up the Columbia River gorge to the Tri-Cities (home). On the way I detoured to the Long Beach Peninsula to check on our vacation home. If anyone has driven 101 south from Montesano to Long Beach, you know it has a few nice curves along Willapa Bay. Since they had just cleared the fallen trees, I got nearly the entire road to myself with no motorhomes or traffic. In the POURING DELUGE of rain, 50-55 mph through "30 mph" corners was no problem on the Yokohama's. There may be better rain tires, but I sure haven't driven on any... The Goodyear GSC's that came on my Corvette (at $275 each) didn't perform any better than these Yokohama's. I don't think anyone would be disappointed with them.
As always, this is just my opinion and experience, your "mileage" may vary.

I drive the car over 1000k/week to work and gas mileage is an issue but so is handling since the roads I drive on have lots of sharp corners and I feel the need to pull g's. the 185/60-13 this the ideal compromise tire for the X1/9. Why Fiat/Bertone so long to figure this out I don't know (the last cars came with this size).
This tires size offers so much more road feel than the 175/70s you are using now. I did exactly the same switch on my current car which came with 175/70s. The car will feel much more like a sports car and you will probably have more grip. You will lose a little bit of ride quality, but not much.
Also, the 175/70 has a greater circumference than the stock size. 165/70 and 185/60 are very close to the original 145-13.
Fender clearance depends laregly on your wheel offset since the tightest spot is usually right in front of the front wheels.

I am running them on the front and they fit real good. I am using a stock fiat 13"x5" steel rim with the stock spacer. The front coils have one coil removed to get a better ride height. Here are some measurements I took so you can see how it fits. Tire height = 21". Height from floor to fender well = 22 1/4". Distance the upper part of the tire is inside the fender = 1". With the tire turned, it comes close to the forward edge of the fender, distance = 5/8". I suspect you could go to a 5 1/2" width rim and be OK.
My rears are 185/60 R14, but that is a different story.

As a comparison does anybody know what these would cost in U.S. dollars (shudder) if I ordered them. Of course I would pay duty and sales tax and not just take a trip across the border like some would, being a good canadian like I am. Boy what a coincidence all this talk going on while I am out today landing a set of 13" Iron Cross wheels! What's more, I got myself a set of 185/60/13s for these. Wow, you guys are in here basically discussing my day (one aspect of it anyway)...
I got the wheels cheap (!) from a wrecking yard that had several noteworthy Fiats. Sorry though, guys, these were the only full set of wheels they had. They did have a few single wheels of various type, one in particular an unusual Cromadora that I have never seen before. I was wishing they would have had a full set of those!
Anyway, see my other post for more on the day I had scrounging at area junkyards...
As for the tires, I got them at Les Schwab for ~$60 each. They carry Falken and Ohtsu in 185/60/13.
BTW, it's good to see Wayne in here! I hope he makes a habit of it

I have a set of Fondemetal 5.5x13 alloy rims. No interference with front fenders even with car lowered. I also added Bayless anti-roll bars front and rear. I've got too much negative camber in the rear (~-3 degrees), but the car turns in and corners hard! Pirelli P6000 summer tires in 185/60/13 which has a diamater of 21.7 inches $125.00 can. or some B.F. goodrich T.A. 215/50/13 with a tire diamater of 21.5" at about the same price.
The t.a's would take a bigger wheel 6" and I don't know if you could get a wheel to fit.
Does anybody have any experience with the Pirelli tires especially in the rain?
Has anybody ever come across a tire size/diameter/width chart?

185/60/13 will fit the stock wheels. Any wider and the tires will start to bulge like a donut on such narrow rims. Even at 185, Wayne's suggestion of a 55 series tire would probably work, but a 185/55/13 seems even more difficult a size to find (don't know for sure), plus any lower profile will also begin increasing the need for a wider rim...
I say order a set of 185/60/13s from Tirerack.com, or else just get some wider rims and go for something completely different. IMHO. -Mac.

Sure they are something of a 'name brand' but that does not make them anything special.
The Yokohama range was completely rehashed early this year. You can still get intermediates (they have a new code now) and they are certainly among the best value for money considering the extremely good performance they offer - even in the wet, but you're in real trouble if you get caught in a real downpour as they cannot shed as much water as 'proper' road tyres.
I've switched to using Bridgestone tyres last year and they have been absolutely fantastic even in the wet (and we get more than enough of that in the UK).
There is a tyre size calculator on the UK owners club site in the links section - just type in the different tyre sizes you want to compare and it gives you a chart of the diameters.

I took my X1/9 to Seattle this week for a conference, figuring it would be pretty dry until mid-Nov... yeah, right! On Wednesday the storm hit; with snow in the pass. My car is a bit low for snow, so I opted to head south down 1-5 and drive up the Columbia River gorge to the Tri-Cities (home). On the way I detoured to the Long Beach Peninsula to check on our vacation home. If anyone has driven 101 south from Montesano to Long Beach, you know it has a few nice curves along Willapa Bay. Since they had just cleared the fallen trees, I got nearly the entire road to myself with no motorhomes or traffic. In the POURING DELUGE of rain, 50-55 mph through "30 mph" corners was no problem on the Yokohama's. There may be better rain tires, but I sure haven't driven on any... The Goodyear GSC's that came on my Corvette (at $275 each) didn't perform any better than these Yokohama's. I don't think anyone would be disappointed with them.
As always, this is just my opinion and experience, your "mileage" may vary.
