in this forum. Has anyone or maybe Steve himself compiled it all to some sort of a compendium (a complete textfile)?

It would be great to get it.

Is it true that a more "sticky oil" can be helpfull if you have bad synchronisers?

What kind of oil should be used in that case? What is "Red Line" oil?

On my european 1500 -80, there is no flexibel coupling and the gearchange link adjustment
dos not include a plate-linkage-plate-linkage-plate as described in manuals.

It's a linkage-linkage with oval holes for the bolts.

Has a previous owner excluded those plates and the flexible coupling, or is this the way it should look on my type of car?<!-- google_ad_section_end -->

Steve's tranny instruction series is lovingly called "5-speed 101" around here. He wrote the entire series in an effort to help guide me through a rebuild of the tranny in my '80 X. What a guy!!!

Yes, the plan is to compile all the text into one guide, along with many pictures I took during the process, and make it available for free on this website, probably as a new volume in the "library" section of the SeaX website. Also, for those of you who are members of FLU (Fiat/Lancia Unlimited) you can expect to see a similar compilation of these texts as an article in an upcoming issue of FLU's "Ricambi" magazine ( yes, guys, I swear I am going to send you that material - I just have to find the time to sit down & compile it! )

SO, yes it will be made available as a reference guide here at the site, hopefully in the not-too-distant future...

I will let Steve H field the questions on the gear oils, as he is the resident expert in that department.

As for your gear linkage, it sounds like someone has lost some pieces from yours! All X1/9s are supposed to have the stacked plates between the 2 linkages. -Mac.

The described setup sounds like a carbureted 1500. Fiat changed the connection between the long tube from the shift lever and the shaft coming out of the transaxle for the '79 model year. The setup was stiffer and less compliant than the "rubber biscuit" linkage piece used earlier (and later). I suspect they had a tendency to wear out the oil seal on the transaxle where the shaft enters. That is what happened on my '79.

Mac is right about the linkage. It sounds like you are missing the sandwitch plates. These will help keep the linkage in proper alignment and adjustment.

As for oil, I should note that no oil can "fix" worn sychronizers. However, a lighter weight oil will permit the synchros to grip better and the input shaft to spin up faster.

Redline is a brand name of synthetic oil available here in the US. I don't know if it is marketed in Europe or not. I am sure there are other brands of light weight gear oil available in Europe. I think NEO is a British company. If you can't find any light weight gear oil, a quality synthetic engine oil, like Mobil 1, will work as well.

I guess I'll have to look for (or maybe fabricate myself) the sandwich plates. Can any of you Exxy masters give me the measures of the plates and position of the holes?

To get the tranny to work somewhat properly, i've been forced to put the adjustment in the most backward place in the oval holes, then the reverse works quit good (doesn't jump out), but the fith is the tough to get in (must pull hard to the right), maybee thats a problem linked to the missing flexible coupling?

[FONT=Trebuchet MS, Verdana, Tahoma, Arial]<!-- google_ad_section_start -->I have never tried to connect the linkage without all the plates, but I would suspect it would make for some difficult shifting into at least one or two gears, as the assembly is not lining up quite the way it was designed to go...

I would try to locate the actual pieces first, before fabricating your own. They are a simple design and would probably be easy to make, but my view is that it would be best to have "the real deal" if possible.

How hard is it to find parts where you are? I imagine you could get these for very little money if you find someone with a stack of X1/9 parts in your region. If that fails, you could easily find the parts via one of the X parts vendors in the UK. -Mac.

They are 71 mm long, 25 mm wide and 3 mm thick (a 1" by 1/8" strip of mild steel will do fine). The two holes are 8 mm diameter and are located on the plate centerline 35 mm apart and at even distances from the ends (18 mm).

I guess it doesn't matter though wether yours are attached to the plate, you can just tighten them down on the bolts and it should work just like stock. Let us know how it goes! -Mac.
