from the trans, I have a rod with a rubber boot. On top of that rod is bolted a plate which has a downward angle. At its other end that plate sits on top of the connecting rod to the shift lever. Under that is the plate with two nuts welded on that accepts the two bolts coming from the top. Is this correct? There is no spacer plate.

The stackup is based on the carburated design. The optional stackup which was incorporated on the newer fuel injected model does have a slightly different arrangement which does include a spacer plate. The newer design also includes the flexible "lollypop" (transmission link).
I would assume the entire assembly would be interchangable between carbed and injected. I don't have a flexlink in front of me but it appears the offsets are similar if not identical.
