Transmission question ;)

Hi

I've just bought another transmission , the seller reckons it's a 4 speed.
Is there an easy way to tell? Sorry if this a dumb question.

I think...

all 4 speeds have a "tripod" style where the halfshaft connects to the trans and the 5 speeds have a CV joint. the four speed should have holes to insert the shafts where the 5 speed has a hub that the CV bolts onto

5 speed pics

The above pic of the 5 speed isn't that good so I put a better one up.

!

The extension housing is the left-most cover in the picture above. If the cover is pretty much flat, it's a four speed. If it's about 4 inches tall, as above, it's a 5 speed. That's were the fifth gear is added.
