I'm running into many problems, please let me know what I'm doing wrong.
1) The wire loop that goes around the handle part, was crimped. How can you get it around the handle if its already crimped? I eventually used a dremel to grind off the crimp, and installed my old securing device, which is just a little barrel, and easily slips over the wires.

2) How do you get the latch mechanism out into the open? I've removed the bolts, but even in closed position, I don't see how it can pass under the "bridge" to the side. I want to get it out, because the other side of the cable sleeve won't slip into the channel. I suspect the groove in the sleeve is not wide enough.

Has anyone else had these problems? Do I have the wrong cable?<!-- google_ad_section_end -->

[FONT=Trebuchet MS, Verdana, Tahoma, Arial]<!-- google_ad_section_start -->I remember doing this job, it looked like a hour an hour job that turned into a whole day. 1. I used the original barrel - i had to form the wire into the circular shape to fit round the pulley in the cabin.

The catch is a fiddle- the catches on latter cars cannot be removed from the opening as it shows in the Haynes manual. Has your replacement cable got a new outer? I tried to feed the new cable into the old outer and it kept getting caught on the kinks and the exit of the outer, to the catch, so i ended up using a new outer as well. There needs to be nothing special at the catch end-just the bare cable. I remember having problems removing the old cable at this end as Bertone had "helpfully" put a 90 degree bend at the end to stop it pulling through. I used long nose pliers to pull it through from this end. If you can fit in, its a lot easier if you sit in the luggage compartment while doing this!
I had problems with getting the pulley circle shape correct without it falling off (copy the profile of the old one if its in one piece! - mine originally snapped about 1/2" on from here where the cable goes into the outer). Check it still wants to stay on when the catch is both open and closed.
I set the handle to the lowest tension (normally open?)
and then tightened the slotted screw on the catch.
The cable seemed to stretch initially, but has settled now.

I had to machine the end to fit into the catch in the front, and dremmeled off the crimp that was on the loop, so I could use my old collar.

Then I find out that the cable is not pre-lubricated, and the latch won't open all the way. Have to take it all apart again and lube the cable.

I had similar bad luck with my door limiting straps. The new ones were so tight I couldn't get the door to close, without pushing in the door jamb. And then everything was completely stuck. I ended up cutting the legs, to get it all out again, so I could close the door. I'm sure I mounted it right side up. <!-- google_ad_section_end -->

[FONT=Trebuchet MS, Verdana, Tahoma, Arial]<!-- google_ad_section_start -->I had to do the same job some time ago and discovered that it was actually possible to tighten the loop at the handle end once it was placed over the peg.

I imagine some of the "stretch" mentioned is actually the same action which results in a slight extension of the cable (enough possibly to prevent the latch releasing correctly).

To make double sure I used a crimp tool to tighten the crimp on the wire once everything was in place.

I went down to my nearest hobby shop and bought a 36 inch length of similar sized "piano wire". I think it was 2 or 3 bucks.

As you noted... much custom work needs to be done and 36 inches is NOT long enough either.

I used it anyway... and filed out the "hook" another 3/4 of an inch or so to compensate.

That was 16 years ago or so... still works fine!

I still get a BANG outta CHEAP speed and getting much from hardly nuttin'! I guess that's why I loved sailing so much also.

My son wa out Sunday night and we made some reall neat CHEAP mods to his 2001 WRX.

Pulled the grill, headlights and side markers. then proceeded to:

1. Removed light pods, diassembled to remove the amber turn signal lenses.
2. Swapped the running lights for turn signals. Left all white.
3. "Blacked out" amber side markers... they now match black body paint... and glow yellow only when lit. Used Duplicolors gloss black and clearcoat.
4. Removed logo, removed BLACK background, kept CHROME stars, repainted background from the rear with a brilliant RED.

All this done with my current stock of rattle cans, and a couple of hours of playing around. Gives the car a completely different look from the front.

BTW... on White Fang, I removed the FIAT logos, diassembled and polished them separately. I took the center FIAT section and polished them out to a mirror finish... (no more faded logo...) then reassembled them with the aluminum crest and reattached to the front and rear of the car. Looks great! Just a mirrored disc up front... installed a rack and a CHROME gas cap offa an 850 and now the rear end now POPS!

Havin' a ball for pennies!

[FONT=Trebuchet MS, Verdana, Tahoma, Arial]<!-- google_ad_section_start -->I had the same exact problem on my 83, and as someone pointed out, the latch cannot be removed in the way the manual suggests. My fix? I disassembled the latch entirely and removed the closer mechaninism. I then patched the hole for the latch, and tapped the patch to accept a locking hood pin. Works great, looks trick, and I'll never have to worry about hood cables again. Now I just have to pray that I don't loose the keys!

Incidentally, the part came from JC Whitney. The site appears to be down, so I can't give you a direct link. As I recall, the pair (I only used one) was about $13.00.

I did make one modification - I used a smaller backing plate than the one that comes with the kit... I made it out of aluminum sheet stock. The backing plate for the hood side is about 3inches across, and simply didn't look right. Oh, I also had to cut off the piece on the hood that the latch affixed itself to in closing. And drill a hole in the hood... I think it was a 1/2 inch opening.
