Turbo Modification info thread

Baja Bob
I have followed the turbo modification threads but am still left wondering about a bunch of details. Thought perhaps we could review all of the issues here as a reference for everyone. ( of course maybe I just missed this covered elsewhere) The questions are:
Fiat Uno 1.3 versus 1.4 ( version 1 versus version 2)
Fiant Uno block versus 1.5 block
Uno head versus 1.5 head
Uno intake and exhaust versus 1.5
Is the intake manifold really different
Uno fuel injection differences
Uno turbo size and specs

In the end what is really needed besides the exhaust system and injection changes.

Well this is whats going into my turbo "kit"

Turbo
Oil lines
Oil cooler
Oil return line in oil pan
Intercooler (air to water)
Water pump, reservoir, & cooler
Intake pipes
Turbo manifold
Exhaust
Injectors
Aftermarket ECU

Thanks Jim

I knew you'd have this info. Record time I might add. Anyway it looks like the Uno has a different block head and trans. All in the name of strength. Still these threads give no details about the differences. I am thinking to turbo the stock motor, should be able to handle another 50 hp. Don't know about the transmission though. I'd think the late exhaust manifold could be used with an adapter.

Intercooler

The late model BMW dual turbo V8 has two very nice air to water intercoolers and an electric pump for the water. Try this at your local wrecker.

Just a search of Xweb 1.0

Hi Bob,

I just did a quick search of the Xweb 1.0 archives for "Uno turbo" and then sorted out these few threads based on their content. I wasn't sure if that was the type of info you were looking for or if it was all old news to you. There is a lot more in the archives, much of it is redundant and it sucks that so many picture links have died over the years. :(

I will take another look at the archives and see if there is anything more of value.

Uno or turbo info

Jim,
That is what I was looking for. I have read here and on some Euro forums but have yet to get enough specifics to really know the details of the differences and/ or alternate turbo options. A local guy offered to bolt a unit to my car, he mods BMW's regularly but I did want to research a little more before I go down this path. My car runs real nice now. We need a detailed write up of this mod. Maybe Wil (Abec) will get if done. He is just down the street from me.
Thanks for the help.
Bob

More

I was planning on waiting until I cleaned these up before posting them, but now seems as good of a time as any to post them.

Picked this up a week ago, one will be going in the X. The other is being saved for my next project

Where pray-tell did you get those? Oh, and gimme one!!!

I mentioned at my shop that I was looking for an intercooler, and would prefer air2water. Then they magically appeared. I guess they are found only on west coast 85 Biturbo E model, so they are rather rare.

Sorry but I will be hanging onto the spare one for some time.:D

Answer to some questions.

Ok, waaay back at the top, the following was asked.

Fiat Uno 1.3 versus 1.4 ( version 1 versus version 2)

There were two blocks made, the 1.3 and the 1.4. The 1.4 has an open deck on the top of the block vs the 1.3 which has a closed deck, meaning you can not see into the water passages. From what I have read the 1.3 seems to be preferred as it is a bit stronger than the 1.4 however both would probably work just fine.

The biggest thing is the exhaust manifold. The 1.3 (mk1) came with a stupid IHI proprietary turbo on it which if it breaks, good luck finding a suitable replacement. The 1.4 exhaust manifold (mk2) switched over to a t25 flange so there are many choices. I personally run a SPA turbo on my car for a gas engine sized 1.1 to 1.3 liters in size.

As for the head. I swear the head of the uno turbo is a late model Yugo head. They are identical. No piston relief and the smaller bolt sizes.

Remember, the block of the 1.3 is not the same block as the standard 1.3. The Uno block has a smaller piston but a longer stroke. So, if anything, it has the same stroke length as the 1500 block but a much smaller bore size.

Uno intake and exhaust versus 1.5

The intake manifold is different only in the sense the drivers side end has a overboost sensor on it, which everyone disables!

I will look up some info on the fuel injectors for you.

Uno turbo size and specs

The 1.3 uses an IHI turbo which works well when it is in good condition. Most who use it immediately put in a bleeder valve into the mix and boost the pressure up to 15 psi which the stock Uno motor will handle. Again though, the IHI uses a propriatary flange, so if it dies you have very little choices.

the 1.4 uses a t25 flange and I am running a SPA turbo for a 1.1 to 1.3 engine. This turbo with no modifications (6psi) feels as strong if not stronger than the IHI set at 15 psi.

Here is a link to the turbo I use, and also another link showing the different sizes.
