The cross members are quite strong and it is rare that anyone ever has a problem with them. The mount is by far the usual suspect. It is common for the rubber to degrade and sag. This usually results in the CV joint rubbing on the cross member, especially under load. From time to time I have seem them crack right at the top where the mount fits into it. I can't thing of anything that would cause a twist.
I have raced X1/9s for years and have never had a cross member failure other than the minor crack.

Seems to me... if its twisted down there... the top side could show some distortion also. Make sure these two "mounts" are in good shape also.
Lastly, does the engine "appear" to sit correctly in the bay. You might wanna take some fore and aft measurements.
The only other possibility I can think of is a sideways drift and hitting a rock or something. One would expect to see some other evidence of damage also.

the bottom line is that the bottom rubber engine mount is not horizontal. There is a definite twist to the left (the driver side). It also looks like the cross member (if that is the right term) the one running longitudly is twisted and its center portion is not horizontal. There is no evidence of any accident. The urrer support and torque bar seem OK. The bottom rubber support is in bad shape but I think it is a result ruther then cause. -Herzel<!-- google_ad_section_end -->

When the lower mount fails, it often sags to the drivers side of the car. It is possible that the mount is bad and the cross member is fine. Once you have it out it is easy to tell if it is indeed bent or if the mount is bad.

When the lower mount fails, it often sags to the drivers side of the car. It is possible that the mount is bad and the cross member is fine. Once you have it out it is easy to tell if it is indeed bent or if the mount is bad.
