The trick part is what is known as "shaving" the door handles- I'm doing this on my modified X. You totally remove the door handle and lock and FILL IN THE HOLE! Solenoids are put into the doors and a remote is attached. Push a button, your door pops open! Great for driving the valet crazy!
A kit to make crank windows into power windows is available, as well as automatic trunk latch kits can help solve some of the more aggravating problems with the X's cable releases.

Basically for a car to be road legal it has to have some manual method for releasing the door catch in the event that someone has to open the door from the outside in an emergency (ie someone is trapped inside). This sort of scuppers the entire thing since it means retaining the original mechanism anyway. This also means you can't lock yourself out of the car if the battery goes flat.
A neat trick is to just remove the locking posts and use a central locking system. This works very well inc conjunction with an alarm/immobiliser system that is armed and disarmed from a remote - especially since this is one of the weak security issues on older Fiats in general.<!-- google_ad_section_end -->

Tha car I am going to do it to is primarily going to be a show car and weekend driver. Since California doesn't (currently) have any type of safety inspection program, once I own the car it's not likely to be caught. Posts are connected to the battery by standard battery cables. If the battery goes dead, you just hook up jumper cables or a charger to the external posts, and you have power to unlock the doors.

I asked him about most of the things talked about here (except for the safety issue, which never occured to me). There was a wire on the inside of the frame underneath the car that could be pulled to open the door on the driver side.<!-- google_ad_section_end -->
