I copied this batch of VINs from Dierk's site (http://www.project-x19.de/forum/viewtopic.php?t=1897).

I noticed that only my car and one other on this batch have the letter "O" as part of the VIN.

Anyone know if that has some significance?

And while we're talkin' VINs, what does Dierk mean when he assigns series Letters to each batch, ie, "Bauserie H- Serie"

might be a designation for series

i've got a "C" in that place on one of mine. which looking at the date of it, looks to be a series code for the planned options.

since there isn't many "o" listings, notice any different trim or options? driving lights? etc.

if it follows a standard vin pattern it would be the production year following the check digit. but seems to conflict due to there is no "o" for production year in a standard vin.

Just curious where on the build list mine is for last year made for the states. 1987 Bertone X1/9 here,(pics soon, went to beach to make sure everything is ok, tires suck on her though)

Thanks, been doing the google translater to get grips on what they are trying to do. Seems like what the guys at the DMC site did(I own one pure WI DMC). Its a great thing, but so many more x1/9's than deloreans(under 10k). Great cause for them. Im just trying to get info tracked down on my x1/9 and dont really want to do the carfax thing till I have a good 6-10 cars to do for 50 bucks:eyepop:

Jake, my car is a plain jane edition.

No A/C, no leather, no spoiler, no luggage rack.

Maybe the "O" indicates a base model without any of the above options?

The letter "O" should not appear in a standard 17 character VIN. (Neither should "I" or "Q")

The 10th position in the VIN is supposed to contain a represent the model year as follows:
1980=A
1981=B
1982=C
1983=D
1984=E
1985=F
1986=G
1987=H

1989=K
1990=L
1991=M
1992=N
1993=P
1994=R
1995=S
1996=T
1997=V
1998=W
1999=X

So it is a mystery. That "O" shouldn't even be there. Maybe you car was never built at all Dan. Run back out to the garage and see if it's really there!! ;)

On all the paperwork I have, it's a "G." Just a typo on Dierk's list.

Ok how do I figure out the production number of my 1974? I have the VIN but I don't know how to decode it. Do Fiat vins hold colors and other info or just production number?
 
Yes I think it is a "G" not an "O". The letter on the plates are often not the best anymore more.
So reading an "O" instead of a "G" is could be. :)
Yes the digit tells the model year. It is not the year of built.
 
Pre-82 VINs not really VINs

IIRC, the standardized VIN was implemented for the '82 model year, so anything before that was a manufacturer's serial number in whatever format the manufacturer wanted to put it in.

Not sure about early cars, but later cars had an additional data plate that had motor info and a "spares" number for helping to ascertain the correct repair parts when parts were redesigned and installed in mid-model year:

Yes, the last 6 digits of the VIN is the serial number of the car.
The VIN (or chassis number) is always impacted into the body somewhere between windshield an the battery.
