[FONT=Trebuchet MS, Verdana, Tahoma, Arial]<!-- google_ad_section_start -->I don't know what size you have but I'd want it to be at least a 12 guage wire, 10 would be better, also make sure the ground (alternator, engine whatever) is decent size also. Make sure the little wire to the alternator is a tight fit (If you've got one, don't remember clearly). The alternator could be wonky as well, as hard as that is to hear.

When first starting the car, about 7000 rpm gets it to kick off, if it doesnt, than a good rev in 1st gear does it. Then when I come to a stop, or am crusing with low RPM's, it comes on...possibly the adjuster screw came loose and slid? It does not visually appear to be slipping, and there is no squeal or smoke, but is that a possibility?

Or how about the plug that goes in the bottom? Bossibly a bad plug? Would replacing it be an option?<!-- google_ad_section_end -->

Interesting symptoms. It's not like I don't trust X1/9 instruments (yeah, OK - maybe I don't)

but have you verified with a voltmeter DIRECTLY on the battery that the light is not faulty?

You should be looking at around 12.5V with the engine off and about 14V running. If the engine is running without charging you will see under 12V.

You should check the charge light as it is a 3W NOT 1.2W like the other lights in the instrument panel. This could also cause your problem. The resistance of the bulb is critical to excitation speed.

If yours has an integral regulator these can be changed quite cheaply if that is the fault.

I also blew up the alternator in the ski boat by disconnecting the battery leads with the engine running.

I believe (although haven't checked yet) that only 1 of the diodes is F#$%ed because it will not charge at idle but 3000rpm makes the light go out until revs again drop below 500. A loose battery terminal can do this to ya.

I am not without my own alternator problems (see my other post) either - join the club.

BTW - I don't think the alternator has an external plug - are you looking at the grommet through the cold air shrowd attached to the back of the alternator?

[FONT=Trebuchet MS, Verdana, Tahoma, Arial]<!-- google_ad_section_start -->I was fiddling around in the front yesterday and I found evidence that battery acid is exiting the top of the battery. You can see runs down the inside of the battery cover.

I started to think overcharging so did a quick check and got the following:

Engine OFF - 12.35V
Engine ON - Charge Light ON - 12.05V
Engine ON - Charge Light OFF - 13.95V

All tests at idle - I forgot to check at higher RPM.

The 2 states of the charge light are a characteristic of my car since I bought it. When starting from cold the light stays on after starting until I "blip" the throttle. (any "blip" - even a tiny one will do).

I should point out that the alternator has always been a bit noisy - I have always assumed it was the belt - but maybe not? The alternator has been rebuilt with a new regulator in the past (genuine Bosch).

Does anyone think I have an overcharging situation or are the extreme cornering and braking G's that I am generating to blame for spilt battery acid?

Would be useful to see what the output is at around 2000-2500 engine rpm. However FWIW, some time ago I noticed similar signs of acid puddling on the battery top, and marks from acid staining on the battery cover on my X after a long run. The battery in my X is a 'supposed' Low Maintenance type but I find that I need to lift the cell caps from time to time to check electrolyte level. To eliminate the above acid 'puddling'I find that the plates can only be just barely covered and no more!! If I top up to the recommended level bar in each cell, the acid leakage you mention in your post will happen. Just a possibility but it might pay to have a really close look at the electrolyte levels in your battery. cheers, ian

I thought the charging levels looked OK, too.

I can't say that any of my previous batteries did this. So maybe this newish battery is overfull. I'll check the output at running revs and the electrolyte level. My battery is NOT low maintenance - I was told to avoid them like the plague.

I agree that this occurs only when running hard. Unfortunately with my light flywheel that pretty much describes driving to the local shops (and everywhere else) lately.
