I have a small unit in the rear trunk pass. side behind tire well that I think is it. The PO has done a job on all the electrics on this 79. I just bought a new alt. ($120) and I dont want to screw it up. The Haynes book doesn't show me enough for me to understand

Anyway, I have a connector with 2 holes (red wire and a green wire)there is also a black wire hanging.
I have the brown wire to the starter attached to the b+ post and there is a black with purple-I think this goes to the volt meter, but I don't know where to attach it.

'78's had a strange (and problematic)Marelli unit with an external electronic regulator mounted in the trunk where you describe. What year is your car? A/C or no?
Is the alt you removed the same type as the one you are installing? Let us know,

Let me cut to the chase... MAKE SURE YOUR GROUND STRAP behind the left rear wheel, between the trans and body, is CLEAN and TIGHT.
If you have any further problems... I have a great wiring diagram I can send you... (it doesn't MATCH my car exactly... but gives one an idea...)
Keep in touch, let us know how you do... Those two wires cannot be miss-wired and you shouldn't hurt anything.

If yur not already doing so... get a DIGITAL VOM to read your voltages ACCURATELY.
One can be had at Harbor Frieght fo 6.99.
Placed across the battery you can then "see" all sorts of things. The exact voltage at rest, s/b 12.6vdc, at 1000 RPM, s/b 13.4vdc if the alternator and V/R are working properly...
Shouldn't drop more than 1.5vdc when cranking...
An analog meter makes it difficult, a digital makes it clear.
I spent 3 weeks trying to figure out a starting problem when I had a good battery, good alternator, and a good starter. Wiring and ignition switch OK.
Then I checked votages at rest and found that I had 12.05vdc at the engine and 12.5 at the battery. My digital VOM didn't show me the .45vdc difference due to the loosened ground strap... when I finally saw that with the digital VOM, I repaired the problem in 2 minutes.
