On the ignition you are running.
For a stock X1/9, the 8mm are fine. The 8.5mm will work, too, but not change the efficiency or performance of the stock system compared with the 8mm.
As a side note, I called Magnecor to ask about using the 8.5mm on my Alfetta GT (3+ restoration) and was told they would work well, even if they were a bit overkill for my largely stock ignition. For me, it was a matter of color - the 8mm are blue and the 8.5mm are red and the Alfetta is red, so ... I *had* to get the red ones. http://xwebforums.org/images/smilies/smile.gif
