Good point (and that was considered). I wondered about the current flow through the windings in the cans myself.
These components were temporary perched on the shelf.
The permanent stations for each will be on the angled sheet metal just above that perch. The individual cans will be oriented 180 degrees from each other to facilitate access to the mounting lugs.
Cover with the bonnet ? Yes and no. The entire train of components will have a formed polycarbonate cover upon completion.
Really going to enjoy the ability to run the extra fan with a manual switch from the dashboard !

In other words, they use a centrifugal actuated "Bendix drive" to engage the starter gear into the flywheel. There is no solenoid on the starter commonly used for the DUAL purpose to transfer a high current DEMAND and to engage (pull-in) the starter gear into the flywheel.
(Remember... the "load", or in this case, the starter, or the headlights, determines the current DRAW and current DEMAND. In my opinion, the solenoids... which are actually just heavy duty relays, are appropriate for starters... and are a bit of an overkill for the headlights. But if ya have a hand full of solenoids at your disposal... why not use them???)
So.... Les has found a method to transfer & switch gops of current using starter solenoids, rather than smaller "auxiliary" relays which are "normally" used... (But what's NORMAL about an X1/9???)

I'm not saying it will kill it instantly, but I dunno if these things will last that long. I'm also of course suspicious of anything mechanical, when solid state is available...

Good point (and that was considered). I wondered about the current flow through the windings in the cans myself.
These components were temporary perched on the shelf.
The permanent stations for each will be on the angled sheet metal just above that perch. The individual cans will be oriented 180 degrees from each other to facilitate access to the mounting lugs.
Cover with the bonnet ? Yes and no. The entire train of components will have a formed polycarbonate cover upon completion.
Really going to enjoy the ability to run the extra fan with a manual switch from the dashboard !

In other words, they use a centrifugal actuated "Bendix drive" to engage the starter gear into the flywheel. There is no solenoid on the starter commonly used for the DUAL purpose to transfer a high current DEMAND and to engage (pull-in) the starter gear into the flywheel.
(Remember... the "load", or in this case, the starter, or the headlights, determines the current DRAW and current DEMAND. In my opinion, the solenoids... which are actually just heavy duty relays, are appropriate for starters... and are a bit of an overkill for the headlights. But if ya have a hand full of solenoids at your disposal... why not use them???)
So.... Les has found a method to transfer & switch gops of current using starter solenoids, rather than smaller "auxiliary" relays which are "normally" used... (But what's NORMAL about an X1/9???)
