Holly & I went out first thing yesterday to track down a cheap used old Honda that we could buy cheap, fix up & sell to turn a buck. What we came home with (strange how this happens) was, instead, a red '74 X1/9 with a VIN in the mid 9000's - woohoo!!!
An X in every garage, that's our new motto. The whole day is still a big blur to me. A blur of rust flakes, corroded fuses & slapping the fuel pump like Fonzie would a jukebox
We found it waaaay up north. Took almost 4 hours to drive there from Olympia. Took less than 10 minutes to cut the deal. Then we drove another 4 hours to get it home.
It only stalled a few times
and each time I was able to fire it right back up with just a sensual massage of the corroded fusebox... "aw, that's good baby, you know I know how you like it" as I gently rub the fuses around like toes in a foot massage. This little lady just needs some TLC to get her goin'
So, I have to be honest - it is actually Holly who bought the car. I found it, looked at it, drove it & cut the deal. Then it occurred to me that I had NO F-IN' MONEY d'oh!!~
Holly stepped right up & bought it! Way to go girl!! Ahh, her first X1/9... The car has some serious cosmetic rust (window frame, rear fender, nosecone) but the strut towers and crossmembers are suprisingly clean! The 3rd gear engagement teeth are ground down (thanks again Steve H for teaching me how to recognize such things!) but 3rd can still be had without a crunch if you just shift gently. It should last for a while anyway.
The interior is a mess, choke is broke, the paintjob is pretty amateur, brakes are soft, there are holes punched in the firewall (bad homespun wiring technique), the windshield is hanging on by silicone & rust flakes, and the fusebox was literally soaking in water (!) but the good points??
PO just installed brand new master & slave including new Pirelli slave hose (and did a good job too), there is a later Bosch coil & an electric fuel pump, the springs are cut about 1½ coils, all the electricals are working, charging system is strong, she's structurally sound & best of all - that engine is in great shape!! Damn that car runs stronger than my '75 did when I parked it
Drove it for 4 hours at 80+ mph and it just sang all the way home the sweet song of SOHC FIAT!
So Holly has bought her 1st X1/9. I need to go update her Registry listing teehee!
OH YEAH, and the best part: what did she pay for it? Well, I am not going to say (in case she decides to fix it up & sell it someday) but I can tell you that she paid a lot less than it is worth, even as it sits. She got a good deal -Mac.

The car has a blanking plate on the mechanical fuel pump mounting location and the previous owner (one of 'em anyway) had installed a very crappy, overpowered & leaky aftermarket electric pump. Yank!! It's outta there!
Plus, most of the fuel lines appear to be the originals from 1974 - yikes!
they're paper-thin and clearly 'toast'...
Spent yesterday evening pulling all that out & putting in new lines along with installing a properly spec'ed aftermarket electric fuel pump. The install went smooth as butter & now the little X runs better than it has in a long time I'm sure. Plus, we have pre-empted the eminent engine bay fire that surely would have been just around the corner for this car!
New tune-up parts, oil change, all the filters yadda yadda, drove it around to get the tranny hot then drained all the ancient blackened GL-1 out (let it drip a good loooong time) and filled it up with MTL. Ahhh, the whole thing is smoother but especially 3rd is now a fair bit easier to engage.
This car has been terribly abused by its many previous owners. This was good for Holly in the haggling process, but it has been hard for the car obviously! Now that she has her mits on it, things are looking up for the ol' X. Holly is very enthusiastic about getting to do all this repair work to the car, she says her favorite part is test driving at the end of each task. I can relate!
Next will be the timing belt, tensioner, inboard cv boot and all the floppy engine mounts!! -Mac.

Driving Mac's Prelude down the freeway from Ferndale, I had this incredible vision of selling the Neon to acquire an X1/9 and some cheap commuter car. At the time I had no idea the X was already mine. My intention was to buy it for Mac. For what do I need with another car? But, when we got her home we realized she was mine.
I swore I wouldn't own an X unless it was a sunset orange '75, however it's pretty obvious that I was wrong. This '74 is the one for me
The very next morning I was out in the garage at 7am trying to start it and go for a drive. Since the choke was broken I couldn't get it going so I had to wait for Mac and I'm glad I did because a few instuctions were in order. It's not like anything I've ever driven before.

By all means, sell the Neon while you can still get serious money for it. Buy a more value-stable car like Mac's Prelude. I don't have a "beater" car, but I really wish I did. Having two project cars as only transportation is pretty stupid.

My first tip:
Increase the main jet size by 5 on both barrels. Much better hot and cold starting, smoother running and a little more power.

The one directly below the red paint is yellow. It really is in okay shape but it sure could use to have some rust removed and a new paint job.
I've not decided if I want to keep the original wheels on it yet. They are in pretty good shape but someone did a really awful silver spray paint job on them and Mac has offered me the wheels off the '80 so I'm just not sure.

It is my general policy when displaying car pics here that (for privacy and potential liability reasons) all license plate #s get blanked unless it is a personalised plate which the vehicle owner would like displayed, such as Ulix with his X's plate, "ULIX1-9" which is quite clever wordplay BTW
It is just a general policy designed to prevent the organization from getting into any potential sticky privacy issues. Call me paranoid, but I just have the group's best interests in mind...
Anyway, it has just become habit to me over time to scrub all the license plates on pics I post unless they are personalised.
About the red tail lights, the only piece of the lens that is different is the little piece on the end. On all the cars up to about '76 or so, all the lenses were red. Then, because of US laws emerging that said all turn signals had to be amber, they changed them from there on. So to answer your question the red lenses came from an older 1300 parts car. -Mac.

Only for the US market (AFAIK) did they make special red lenses. After a couple of years, they went back to amber. This would almost suggest that there might have been a red-turnsignal law in the US at that time.
There have always been US cars with red turnsignals, many still have them today. So I don't think that there was an amber law. Even worse, many used the brake light filament for a turn signal which can be very confusing when the driver steps on the brake and tunrs on the signal at the same time...

The deal is not done yet though, so only time will tell. Plus I would then have to modify the car so I could mount them, as it is a different setup entirely. Most of the "gurus" I have spoken with about mounting quarter-bumpers to a later car have said it cannot be done without a tremendous amount of modification to the car's shock tubes etc.
But the idea that "it can't easily be done" is just egging me on even more!
I am pretty sure I could figure out an easier way than chopping up the car, but I would not know or try until I actually had the bumpers.
Anyhow, that is not a bad idea. If the Lido bumper purchase falls through, I intend to get a set of regular quarter-bumpers and have them done up in 'black chrome'. I think that would look pretty good on this car. It would be highly unique while still not looking too "aftermarket".

real Lido bumpers would be cool.
But as I am sure you know, while they look somewhat similar, the euro 1300 bumpers are different from the US '74 bumpers. If you wanted to use the US bumper block, you would have to cut the Lido bumpers to the length of the US bumpers and somehow attach attachment points to the inside. Otherwise, you would have to get a set of euro overriders or go w/o overriders.
The mounting of the bumpers is not so hard, but if you wanted to cut back the bumper tubes and close up the holes, some welding and painting would be involved. I don't know how much the '74 bumper blocks would cover the holes. But now you have Holly's '74 around to compare!

About the bumpers, yes you are correct, the Euro quarters are actually quite different in construction, although they are similar in appearance.
The set of Lido bumpers I am after already include the Euro bump-stops (aka overriders) so that would not be an issue, I just have to close the deal - and they ain't gonna be cheap! The conversion from US Dollars is killing me!
Anyway, if I can't make it happen, I mentioned toying with the idea of "black chrome" plating a normal set. "Black chrome" is similar in process to standard chrome, except that where standard chrome would come out (as we all know) looking a very bright polished silvery color, an item done in black chrome will come out looking basically black, except that it is chrome. Hence the name
So from anywhere more than a few feet away, they would just look like regular black quarters, but perhaps they would look unusually brightly polished. Up close you would see right away that they are black chrome. It would look very bright & highly polished, just black instead of silver.
On most X1/9s it might not look very good. It would have to "go" with the color scheme IMHO. But on my car, which already has a very glossy black paintjob, I think it would probably look pretty badass. Of course, I am just speculating... -Mac.

Holly & I went out first thing yesterday to track down a cheap used old Honda that we could buy cheap, fix up & sell to turn a buck. What we came home with (strange how this happens) was, instead, a red '74 X1/9 with a VIN in the mid 9000's - woohoo!!!
An X in every garage, that's our new motto. The whole day is still a big blur to me. A blur of rust flakes, corroded fuses & slapping the fuel pump like Fonzie would a jukebox
We found it waaaay up north. Took almost 4 hours to drive there from Olympia. Took less than 10 minutes to cut the deal. Then we drove another 4 hours to get it home.
It only stalled a few times
So, I have to be honest - it is actually Holly who bought the car. I found it, looked at it, drove it & cut the deal. Then it occurred to me that I had NO F-IN' MONEY d'oh!!~
Holly stepped right up & bought it! Way to go girl!! Ahh, her first X1/9... The car has some serious cosmetic rust (window frame, rear fender, nosecone) but the strut towers and crossmembers are suprisingly clean! The 3rd gear engagement teeth are ground down (thanks again Steve H for teaching me how to recognize such things!) but 3rd can still be had without a crunch if you just shift gently. It should last for a while anyway.
The interior is a mess, choke is broke, the paintjob is pretty amateur, brakes are soft, there are holes punched in the firewall (bad homespun wiring technique), the windshield is hanging on by silicone & rust flakes, and the fusebox was literally soaking in water (!) but the good points??
PO just installed brand new master & slave including new Pirelli slave hose (and did a good job too), there is a later Bosch coil & an electric fuel pump, the springs are cut about 1½ coils, all the electricals are working, charging system is strong, she's structurally sound & best of all - that engine is in great shape!! Damn that car runs stronger than my '75 did when I parked it
Drove it for 4 hours at 80+ mph and it just sang all the way home the sweet song of SOHC FIAT!
So Holly has bought her 1st X1/9. I need to go update her Registry listing teehee!
OH YEAH, and the best part: what did she pay for it? Well, I am not going to say (in case she decides to fix it up & sell it someday) but I can tell you that she paid a lot less than it is worth, even as it sits. She got a good deal -Mac.

The car has a blanking plate on the mechanical fuel pump mounting location and the previous owner (one of 'em anyway) had installed a very crappy, overpowered & leaky aftermarket electric pump. Yank!! It's outta there!
Plus, most of the fuel lines appear to be the originals from 1974 - yikes!
Spent yesterday evening pulling all that out & putting in new lines along with installing a properly spec'ed aftermarket electric fuel pump. The install went smooth as butter & now the little X runs better than it has in a long time I'm sure. Plus, we have pre-empted the eminent engine bay fire that surely would have been just around the corner for this car!
New tune-up parts, oil change, all the filters yadda yadda, drove it around to get the tranny hot then drained all the ancient blackened GL-1 out (let it drip a good loooong time) and filled it up with MTL. Ahhh, the whole thing is smoother but especially 3rd is now a fair bit easier to engage.
This car has been terribly abused by its many previous owners. This was good for Holly in the haggling process, but it has been hard for the car obviously! Now that she has her mits on it, things are looking up for the ol' X. Holly is very enthusiastic about getting to do all this repair work to the car, she says her favorite part is test driving at the end of each task. I can relate!
Next will be the timing belt, tensioner, inboard cv boot and all the floppy engine mounts!! -Mac.

Driving Mac's Prelude down the freeway from Ferndale, I had this incredible vision of selling the Neon to acquire an X1/9 and some cheap commuter car. At the time I had no idea the X was already mine. My intention was to buy it for Mac. For what do I need with another car? But, when we got her home we realized she was mine.
I swore I wouldn't own an X unless it was a sunset orange '75, however it's pretty obvious that I was wrong. This '74 is the one for me
The very next morning I was out in the garage at 7am trying to start it and go for a drive. Since the choke was broken I couldn't get it going so I had to wait for Mac and I'm glad I did because a few instuctions were in order. It's not like anything I've ever driven before.

By all means, sell the Neon while you can still get serious money for it. Buy a more value-stable car like Mac's Prelude. I don't have a "beater" car, but I really wish I did. Having two project cars as only transportation is pretty stupid.

My first tip:
Increase the main jet size by 5 on both barrels. Much better hot and cold starting, smoother running and a little more power.

The one directly below the red paint is yellow. It really is in okay shape but it sure could use to have some rust removed and a new paint job.
I've not decided if I want to keep the original wheels on it yet. They are in pretty good shape but someone did a really awful silver spray paint job on them and Mac has offered me the wheels off the '80 so I'm just not sure.

It is my general policy when displaying car pics here that (for privacy and potential liability reasons) all license plate #s get blanked unless it is a personalised plate which the vehicle owner would like displayed, such as Ulix with his X's plate, "ULIX1-9" which is quite clever wordplay BTW
It is just a general policy designed to prevent the organization from getting into any potential sticky privacy issues. Call me paranoid, but I just have the group's best interests in mind...
Anyway, it has just become habit to me over time to scrub all the license plates on pics I post unless they are personalised.
About the red tail lights, the only piece of the lens that is different is the little piece on the end. On all the cars up to about '76 or so, all the lenses were red. Then, because of US laws emerging that said all turn signals had to be amber, they changed them from there on. So to answer your question the red lenses came from an older 1300 parts car. -Mac.

Only for the US market (AFAIK) did they make special red lenses. After a couple of years, they went back to amber. This would almost suggest that there might have been a red-turnsignal law in the US at that time.
There have always been US cars with red turnsignals, many still have them today. So I don't think that there was an amber law. Even worse, many used the brake light filament for a turn signal which can be very confusing when the driver steps on the brake and tunrs on the signal at the same time...

The deal is not done yet though, so only time will tell. Plus I would then have to modify the car so I could mount them, as it is a different setup entirely. Most of the "gurus" I have spoken with about mounting quarter-bumpers to a later car have said it cannot be done without a tremendous amount of modification to the car's shock tubes etc.
But the idea that "it can't easily be done" is just egging me on even more!
Anyhow, that is not a bad idea. If the Lido bumper purchase falls through, I intend to get a set of regular quarter-bumpers and have them done up in 'black chrome'. I think that would look pretty good on this car. It would be highly unique while still not looking too "aftermarket".

real Lido bumpers would be cool.
But as I am sure you know, while they look somewhat similar, the euro 1300 bumpers are different from the US '74 bumpers. If you wanted to use the US bumper block, you would have to cut the Lido bumpers to the length of the US bumpers and somehow attach attachment points to the inside. Otherwise, you would have to get a set of euro overriders or go w/o overriders.
The mounting of the bumpers is not so hard, but if you wanted to cut back the bumper tubes and close up the holes, some welding and painting would be involved. I don't know how much the '74 bumper blocks would cover the holes. But now you have Holly's '74 around to compare!

About the bumpers, yes you are correct, the Euro quarters are actually quite different in construction, although they are similar in appearance.
The set of Lido bumpers I am after already include the Euro bump-stops (aka overriders) so that would not be an issue, I just have to close the deal - and they ain't gonna be cheap! The conversion from US Dollars is killing me!
Anyway, if I can't make it happen, I mentioned toying with the idea of "black chrome" plating a normal set. "Black chrome" is similar in process to standard chrome, except that where standard chrome would come out (as we all know) looking a very bright polished silvery color, an item done in black chrome will come out looking basically black, except that it is chrome. Hence the name
So from anywhere more than a few feet away, they would just look like regular black quarters, but perhaps they would look unusually brightly polished. Up close you would see right away that they are black chrome. It would look very bright & highly polished, just black instead of silver.
On most X1/9s it might not look very good. It would have to "go" with the color scheme IMHO. But on my car, which already has a very glossy black paintjob, I think it would probably look pretty badass. Of course, I am just speculating... -Mac.
