I want to PRESERVE my X!

Currently in Wisconsin, where the weather varies greatly in temp and humidity. (summer 50-100 degrees)

Will probably store for the winter, and then take it with me when I move to southern California next year!

Given all this, what are my best bets?

All opinions are welcome and appreciated.

[FONT=Trebuchet MS, Verdana, Tahoma, Arial]<!-- google_ad_section_start -->Well, as far as coolant goes, Evans coolant by far the best. It requires very specific changes to the car in order for it to work properly, but the boil-over protection is second to none!

Oil? Any full synthetic is better than any conventional oil. They handle wider ranges of temperature, they lubricate better (hence why they tend to leak a bit on car with really old seals) Be careful as synthetics tend to find any and all leaks in your engine. For a good alternative to full synthetics, add one quart of synthetic in place of one of your quarts of conventional oil to get the detergents and thermal protection of the synthetic.

For all of my cars, regular Champions work pretty well. NGK's are even better. Stay away from the goofy looking gimmick plugs (multiple electrodes, titanium, etc.)

Basically by well established name brand products, change them regularly, allow the car to warm up before you beat on it and you should be fine.<!-- google_ad_section_end -->

But... I have proven to myself time and time again that Bosch (single tip) Platinums give me more power and ease of starting than ANY other plug... and they are reasonably priced! Usually 1.99 - 2.99 each.

The tapered negative electrode virtually "UNSHROUDS" the spark increasing fuel burning efficiency to the tune of about 3 HP!

Right on with the oil... six of one or a dozen of the other... One qt. of Duralube for 12 bucks and 3 regular quarts of oil... or spend about the same money using sythetics. (Duralube has PROVEN to drop engine operating temp by 17 degrees alone. Some say [claim] synthetics do the same thing!)

In LA-LA-LAND... I like using the thickest widest spread for hot days... like 10-40 or 20-50.

As far as the coolant goes... I have found that the stock operating system when clean, PURGED, and in good order... Keeps my X cool even on the hottest days at 108...

Things to insure... good fan operation... I added a second one... radiator PURGED properly, good venting at the rear. Also... insure you have a good 13lb. radiator cap... (Stant 229)

If you must use the Evans coolant... something is really wrong... wrong!

My nickel's worth...

[FONT=Trebuchet MS, Verdana, Tahoma, Arial]<!-- google_ad_section_start -->I'm sure Mr. Obert is quite astute at what he does and much of what he says makes sense and is quite accurate.

Below... is what I THINK you are referenceing... only took me 20 minutes to find it...

"1973–89: All the later cars sport the short neck radiator cap. Your average auto parts store will
automatically sell you the short-neck cap, probably a Stant brand. While Stant claims that their
14–lb–rated cap is correct for these cars, they're wrong! The Stant caps are designed for a
completely different radiator neck. The 14 pound rating is also incorrect. Fiats are rated to bleed off
at 0.8 atmospheres (one atmosphere equals 14.7 pounds per square inch). 0.8 times 14.7 is not
equal to 14 pounds, so even if it were the correct neck dimensions, the pressure is still too high.

With one of these caps your radiator won't start to bleed off pressure until it's built up higher than it
should. If your car has a tendency to overheat, that extra pressure could do serious damage."

Now... where I tend to diagree is in the second parpagraph... but first... .8 atmospheres would be equivilant to 11.76 lbs... Stant claims the CORRECT cap is the Model 229 at 14 lbs... what they are REALLY saying is... that is the CLOSEST cap THEY MAKE for the the application. I've seen this done with oil filters also. The cap appears to fit and seal against the stock filler neck as well as any other car I've seen. I think the stainless tanks may have been deeper... but the plastic tanks seem to be a perfect fit... from what I've seen.

Secondly... the EXTRA pressure doing serious damage would probably be in the form of a water pump seal or possibly a head gasket... other things could be burst hoses or ruptured radiators and heater cores. None of these are fun...

But with 148K on Black Tooth in LA heat... I'm on my second Stant 229... and I did loose a WP seal at about 118K. The engine has never had the head off!

With the purging, a clean system, Duralube, and a second fan... I never see over 195 degrees @ 80mph all day long... anymore!

It also never pukes as the pressure PREVENTS the water from boiling.

I believe that the extra 2.94 lbs. of pressure I could POSSIBLY develop BEFORE it pukes would generally not impact the system... although it could.

I imagine if I found a 12 lb cap that would fit that would be a better choice. Stants are 5 bucks... Improving the cooling performance as I have over the last 18 years doesn't make my argument pure, either... But I went ahead and installed a new Stant 229 on White Fang as well!

HA!

How much are Mr. Obert's caps?

Yep, I thought I'd share that with you. Took twenty minutes to find, eh ? Sorry for not supplying the URL initially. There is also another site that presents the same design information on the pressure ratings in a little different language than Chris's site.

I wondered about the STANT caps I've seen on the X's around here and you say that you have not experienced overpressure problems. Good deal. I'll record the STANT number and put it in the optional part catalog I've been assembling.

The OEM cap cost is around the same price. $3.95 If my memory serves me correctly. Which vendor ? I don't remember. They do come cad plated with the nice gold sheen though which the STANT does not have....HA! I'm thinking most STANTS have the pressure relief lever on them also. That is a good feature over the OEM (if you ever have to use it).

I measured the stainless X tank and the plastic X tank and mine have identical depth on the neck. The neck depth can vary depending on which FIAT model from what I've read.

PS....don't tell anyone...but I installed a FRAM oil filter on the motor based on the FRAM catalog. It has the correct thread and the sealing ring makes good contact BUT the diameter is greater than the OEM one. Will I be issued a citation ?

I once saw an absolutely incredible research study on the web (was it once posted on Mirafiori years ago?) wherein the researcher had bought basically one of every conceivable oil filter on the US market and cross-sectioned them for inspection. If I recall correctly it was the Mobil1 filter that won the reseracher's "favorite" rating on a basis combined between manufacture (ie: the guts) vs the cost. A surprise close 2nd place went to Delco filters (?!)

I do recall though them pointing out that, of all the filters available from FRAM, it was their mid-range "tough guard" filter that was highest in their quality rating, oddly beating out the "double guard" filter which is more expensive. I have been using various oil filter brands, and have yet to find a personal favorite.

An aside about Fram, Allied Signal just got sucked up by Honeywell, so don't be surprised if the Fram packages all turn red

I'm going to use Duralube and the Bosch plugs as per your recommendation.

What brand of oil do you use with the Duralube? Do you use a semi-synthetic with it, or just plain oil?

There are many other ways though... like dropping the radiator to the ground or filling the tank with the nose pointed down hill.

As for oil... I like Castrol 20-50... and BTW... saw Castrol's Synthetic at Wal Mart today for 4.51 a quart.

4 quarts of synthetic would be less expensive than thye Duralube... especially if it gives you the same benefits.

I have also used QS 20-50 and as its reasonably priced at about 99 cents for ALL my cars.

When did this happen? I thought all these additives were the same Dupont junk. I've never found any difference, but it's really hard to test or judge from experience.

Slick 50 was forced by the court to change their ad claims, another has ammonia in its base which will eat at your aluminum over time.

"My other car" board recommends Militec, and they claim to be a provider for the US army and Mercedes.

I have used Duralube now in two older cars, three, including White Fang.

I ran my Toyota Van until it hit its normal operating temp... the same it had for years and years as I had about 140K on it at the time. Shut off the engine... pured in Duralube... restrated and WATCHED the temp DROP.

Installed in my 148K Fiat and it now operates a good 18 or 19 degrees LESS than it ever had. The fans never even go one in the winter... and I never go over about 199 in 108 degree summer.

Works for me... 225K on the toy when it blew a head gasket... and the head has never been off Black Tooth!

Maybe its magic... but it has me convinced!

[FONT=Trebuchet MS, Verdana, Tahoma, Arial]<!-- google_ad_section_start -->No, seriously. How can you ever test all the claims they make? I thought it all sounded reasonable, and bought my share, but now I have serious doubts.

I thought the heat reduction was supposed to come from reduced friction. So if your engine was shut off when you poured it in, you're not reducing friction. I think the cold Duralube was merely absorbing heat from the head, and that made your temp go down.<!-- google_ad_section_end -->

[FONT=Trebuchet MS, Verdana, Tahoma, Arial]<!-- google_ad_section_start -->I have a problem with ALL those claims also...

I had two friends on two different occasions tell me that they were amazed at how well Duralube worked at reducing temperature.

I was still grumpling that "I was being sucked in" with these claims and that my friends, that I ONCE held in HIGH MECHANICAL regard... were missing something!

I don't make a dime offa this and I have a wife and four dogs that love me... so I don't need the accalades either.

Just thought I'd share my experience... and its one I have experienced personally 3 times.

Best Regards,

[FONT=Trebuchet MS, Verdana, Tahoma, Arial]<!-- google_ad_section_start -->But the application was for my Ford Van used under some difficult operating conditions. I see no real reason to put it in my X. The stuff is very expensive and is incompatible with other coolants. Evans coolant was designed to cope with the hellish heat in racing engines. Street cars really don't need it. A good quality 50/50 antifreeze mix will be fine in a properly-maintained car. If you are REALLY worried about corrosion, International Auto Parts offers a sacrificial magnesium anode coolant drainplug for Fiat 124 engines. Bet you could find some way to put in an X system. <!-- google_ad_section_end -->
