I have a love/hate relationship with my (actually my better halfs) 78 X1/9. She bought it new and we have just completed a 2 year restoration. Looking for advice on wheels and tire sizes as the finishing touch. Am considering a set of Panasports, 13 x 5.5 with a 20mm offset with 175/70-13 tires. Have installed performance springs and struts on the car which lowered it about an inch. Are there any concerns with tire clearance? (looks like it might be tight by the springs). Look forward to your help.<!-- google_ad_section_end -->

first welcome to the forum. You will find a nice crowd, lot's friends, believe me.

Regarding your passion with these cars we all can confirm this for ourselves. I am owning now the 5th X and I am hopeless lost.

Don't put some 175/70 on your nice panasports. The X is a car crying for low profile tires. Give him some nice high performance 185/60/13 tires. The 175/70/13 may fit, but the X wasn't designed for such tall tires. Fiat equipped the cars originally with 165/70 tires, Bertone later equipped them with 185/60 and they rock.

Have much fun with these cars

Thanks for the help! It's unanimous, 185/60-13 is the popular vote! However I think I'll have to go a summer or two before upgrading. (I really blew the budget putting the car back together!!!)

I had a set of 175/70-13 that I wanted to use (they are paid for) and I really like the Panasport wheels (no offense Ulix), but was concerned about fit. Anyway, I ordered the wheels and will use the 175s till I rebuild my bank account. Hey, they HAVE to be better than the 145/13 and 4.5 inch original equipment!

This won't happen for awhile, have 8 inches of snow on the ground and I'll NEVER bring the car out into another Ohio winter again. (Thats why it took 2 years to rebuild!).

Thanks again for all the advice and I'll be back to browse on a regular basis!

[FONT=Trebuchet MS, Verdana, Tahoma, Arial]<!-- google_ad_section_start -->Hi Jim,

sounds like you have a very nice car there!
Can you post some pictures here?

A 5.5x13" rim is a great choice for an X1/9, and there really is no choice in tires. The 185/60 is perfect for the X, especially one with a sport suspension.
I would recommend the Yokohama AVS Intermediate.

When I bought my car, it came with 175/70s. They are too tall, they look uninspiring, may rub on the front fender and give a vague steering feel. The difference in going to 185/60s is incredible.

I think you will be ok on the offset. I currently have 5" rims with 24mm offset with 185/60. If your front tires get too close to the spring you could use an extra wheel spacer, but probably would have to convert to longer wheel studs. Or a little bit of filing can be done on the spring or spring perch.

Have you seen X1/9s with Panasports? If not, I think I can point you to some pictures. Some people (me
wink.gif
) think that the rounded soft curves of the Panasport wheels don't go that well with the angular body of the X. I prefer 4 or 5 larger spokes. Of course this is very subjective and a matter of personal taste.

My X is in my shop for the winter; I'm reading with interest the transmission thread as I have a leaking right rear axle seal and am going to go through and freshen up the syncros this winter as well. Anyway, I have had a set of 185/60-13 AVS Intermediates on 5.5x13 wheels since mid-October. I love 'em. The only complaint I have is that they are even sticky when cold and the frozen gravel in my driveway sticks to the tread... which promply gets thrown all over when I hit the street. It's also noisy on the inner fender wells. This doesn't happen when the temperature is above 45 F or so. If you can get at older messages on this forum, you'll find me extolling the virtues of these tires on a rain soaked trip from Seattle to the Long Beach Peninsula in late October... fond memories to curl up next to the fire with. Can't wait 'til spring!

I agree with the others, 185/60/13 would be the best option for your wheel size. I personally am rather fond of the way Panasports look on an X, but as Ulix says, to each their own. I do have to admit though that they look more fitting on a Spider, again just opinion.

At any rate, I ran 70 series tires on my '80 X last year. They were cheap and easily available, and I was using my stock stamped-steel 13x5 wheels. I figured they would look more proportional on these wheels than the 60 series wheels. Well, they did look fine, but proved to be a bit too squishy in the corners for my taste.

Between then & now I have gathered up a couple of extra sets of wheels, and I promptly took the 70 series tires off & put them on my old Honda rims. Presto! Winter wheels for the old Prelude
wink.gif

I got some cheapie local 185/60/13s and put them on a set of CD-91s I found cheap (hey, I'm on a budget) and when the tranny goes back in, the X will be on the 185/60s again, and I am looking forward to that!

I agree with Ulix that you should check out the Yokos. Great tire from what I've heard. I will try that brand next time around. Peace, -Mac.

[FONT=Trebuchet MS, Verdana, Tahoma, Arial]<!-- google_ad_section_start -->Offset , usually measured in mm, is the distance of the mounting face of the rim from the center line of the rim. So, if the offset was 0 mm, the mounting face would be directly in the center of the rim. A CD91 has an offset of 24mm, which means it sticks in towards the strut more than a rim with a smaller offset.

Backspacing is the way the offset is expressed on most US rims. It is measured from the mounting face to the inside edge of the wheel. Usually measured in inches, around 4" is a good value for an X1/9. CD91 have around 4-1/8" backspacing. Backspacing is much easier to measure yourself (if the rim doesn't state its offset).

If a rim has too much offset or backspacing, the tire may hit the spring perch, or the inside of the front tire will hit the wheel well behind the steering rack tunnel.

If a rim has too little offset or backspacing (it sticks out too far), the outside of the front tire will hit the fender right in front of the front wheel.

The wider a rim and tire you choose, the more spot-on your offset has to be.
Changing the offset will also change the suspension and steering characteristics slightly, but this is not enough to worry about on a street car where only slight variations in offset are feasible.

So, as Ulix said (but using these terms), a "positive" offset would mean the hub mounting surface is closer than center to the outside face of the wheel. A "negative" offset would mean it is further than center from the face.

Examples:

Positive offset: a front-wheel-drive rim.

Negative offset: rapper Honda.
