both weld and centerline will custom drill wheels to any pattern you want..

but more on topic, i ran a set of 13 x 8 cragar ss wheels on the front and 13 x 10's on the back, of one of mine for many years. i put over 100,000 miles on this wheel and tire setup (pirelli p7-f 175/50r13 front, 235/50r13 rear, with no problems whatsoever, on a radically lowered (2" rear 3.5" front) '79.

the cool part? the wheels were 4 on 100mm, which are available _everywhere_, and they'll bolt up fine with a stud kit and lots of anti sieze on the lugnut shoulders and threads.

many many hard street miles, hard auto x use, some "high speed logging road" stuff, etc. with no problems whatsoever...

and since 4 on 100 is honda and much vw, it massivley opens up the selection...

the wheels and tires actually fit fine as well, once the camber plates were installed to put the outside edge of the tire back on the ground.
looked like a skateboard, since i had about 2" of rubber sticking out past the fenders front and rear, but as the tires almost touched the struts it looked damnned good

[FONT=Trebuchet MS, Verdana, Tahoma, Arial]<!-- google_ad_section_start -->Depends on where you go & how you get one. If you want to buy a used engine, you could do it either through some vendor source (which could be expensive) or you can do it private-party (which would likely be less, but the downside is that you don't necessarily know who you're dealing with) or even through the occasional junkyard (but then you will probably still pay too much)...

Of course, the beautiful thing about X1/9s is, why pay a fortune for an engine when you could probably get an entire running driveable (but rusty) X for less?
happy.gif

I suggest since you're already looking for a chassis, and an engine, why not grab the first rotten cheapie that comes your way as long as the engine is sound? Some people give the rusty ones away! Can't beat free
wink.gif

Then you take your time to locate the sound body you are after, and start swappin' parts around. This is not an uncommon way of raising Xs from the dead while thinning the field of rusty klunkers at the same time. Plus, you'll have a wealth of spare parts afterward! Whatta deal! -Mac.

the reason i asked about engines is because i had a deal all worked out yesterday, and it fell apart because there's not title for the chassis, but the guy has 2 running engines and 5 speeds, so I was kinda looking for a "what's it worth"..

as i have 3 chassis in the same predicament, and a couple stripped ones that i need to do something with cause i don't have the titles for them, I don't need another...

Now I follow you. Well, the first things to consider (to me) are: where are you located, and where are the parts? Suprisingly, parts & cars vary in value by region more than some folks may think. Are they close to you? What region are you in? -Mac.

[FONT=Trebuchet MS, Verdana, Tahoma, Arial]<!-- google_ad_section_start -->He's right on Boston Harbor road and has a bunch of X stuff - spare blocks in a shed etc - I think he's got a complete engine right there out of a car! Downside is I think it has been sitting out for a while, so don't know of condition but it came from an X that was broadsided, the engine ran when it came out.

He also has one of my old parts cars. The 1500 in that would also need freshening, but AFAIK is only missing the airflow meter, belts and a few little bits that you probably have spares for already. Don't know for sure the condition of the internals though, I got it as a parts car and traded it off to him...

At any rate, I would think a good used (stock) engine by itself with that kind of mileage on it would have to be worth up to a couple hundred bucks, give or take - IF you know it is basically usable as-is, and it's not too far away from you. For any variations from that (cannot verify parts that may need replacing etc) the value (to me) drops.

Also, if one is worth $200, 2 are NOT worth $400, it's a non-linear kind of thing. The more you buy, there should be some kind of price break. These are just my own thoughts on haggling though - not any kind of official appraisal. I will haggle always for the lowest possible price, especially on used parts! It is just plain hard to justify spending a big wad of cash on used parts, they're USED and you really could just go out and get an entire car for free (many of us have!)

Also factor in the cost of gaskets & seals that will have to be replaced in the process, I'd figure at least $100 (more if you can afford to) just for the extra bolts & gaskets & weird little tools etc that you will inevitably need, then any major parts needed on top of that.

You can see how the value of separate parts (to me) drops quickly in light of how cheaply an entire parts car can be had, but I can understand if you don't want to go there again!

IF it is an engine that has been freshened or flat out rebuilt, the cost could range anywhere from a few hundred on up to a grand or more, depending. And of course, there are folks like MM, who pay $50 for one and turn some wrenches - bang! Instant engine

yeah :) what i meant by "been there" is i've built like 10 from the ground up.. that's why i've got so many parts cars and so on but no runners. :/

this 81 looks very saveable though, but i need some bodywork done...

how much did you sell it to him for?

i looked at the car pretty hard before i bought it, the clear title was what sold me on it.

hrm.

right front fender and nose piece are crinkled.

bumper mounts are straight.

grille is gone.

alignment tracks fine while being towed (doesn't pull) but the left front brake was dragging bigtime all the way home (about 5 miles) so i'll assumme the alignment is way out. (the pirelli's on it look good on the outside, belts showin on the inside.)

shifter is disconnected from the transmission (tino said he sold the part)

brake pedal comes back up slow.
clutch peadal doesn't come back up at all.

right front headlight well lid is whacked, and the top of the well is as well.

hood is wasted.

very minor front trunk rust, slightly less minor winshield frame rust (nothing rusted through by any stretch)

drivers seat is shredded.

rearview miror sucks
happy.gif

right door has rust along the bottom.

both sides the weatherstripping connector hole at the back of the door is rusted out.

other than the above, it's in decent shape.

questions:

found a brand new still in the bag timing belt in the rear trunk, but there's one on the motor... ?

hows the motor and tranny in this car? (i.e. should i get it running or does it have a thrown rod don't bother, or what?

True! I earned that nickname in the Navy, where your last name is displayed on everything you own, including your dungaree shirts. All my life I had been called Ian (my first name) until I went off to the Navy. My shirts all said McIntosh on them, and everyone just started calling me 'Mac' - the name stuck, and now when someone says, "hey Ian" I hardly realize they are reffering to me!

Tino thinks pretty highly of you...

Likewise. He's a good man. Here's a little piece of trivia for ya: I bought my '75 from Tino waaay back in 1990. The first time I ever met Tino, my '75 was sitting in his front yard with a 'for sale' sign on it. He had just done a ton of labor on it for the PO, who could not pay, and agreed to just let Tino sell it to recover his money. Lucky me!
happy.gif
It was the first time I actually owned an X. I had been into them for many many years prior to this, but that '75 was the first one I actually owned (and I still have it today) so you could say that Tino started me off on this whole X-cellent adventure...

lets play a game... how much did you sell it to him for?

I didn't, I traded it to him against some $$ I owed him on labor costs for my '80 X...

Not sure about that. My guess would be that the alignment is probably okay, the real problem being that either the right front brake caliper is stuck & dragging the rotor, or that the front suspension rubber parts are shot (likely both of those things)...

Here's the tale of your car as best I can tell it: One day in the spring of 1998 (actually it was just a couple of months before SeattleX1/9 was founded) I was glancing through the 'little nickel' classifieds and saw an ad for this car. For sale with no price listed other than "best offer". At the time I was looking for a parts-car that I could cut up & use for body panels in the restoration of my '75 - it needs a fender, front hood & a nosecone, among other bits. I went to see the car & it's owner: a really nice gentleman named Carlo who lived in the town of Bonney Lake, Wa.

Carlo told me that he had owned the car since the '80s, and loved it dearly. He explained that the car had been involved in an accident in 1990 (the cause of the body damage you mentioned) and that when that happened, he put the car in his back yard until he could afford/locate all the parts he would need to fix it. He had every intention of repairing the car - he really wanted to keep it, he was very fond of the X, but things just did not work out that way for him. The car sat there in his back yard for a while, eventually when he tried to go out there and get it running again, the car refused to start because it had sat for too long. He did not have the free time to dedicate to it anymore (he was very frustrated about that) and so it just continued to sit there. For eight years!

Then I came along this day and met him. He told me the tale and was sincerely bothered that he had never brought the car back to its former glory. He had just acquired another car (an old Pontiac I believe? Some classic muscle car anyway) which was going to be his new project, and so that meant he would never get back to the poor X in the yard. He wanted to find someone who would promise to restore the X1/9.

I was honest with him, and told him that I was looking for a parts-car that I could cut up for body panels for my '75. He cringed at the thought, then he thought about it a while, the fact that his X had sat for so long, and had the body damage etc. made him feel it was unlikely anyone would ever come his way & be willing to restore the car. I told him that I would take the car & "fix it if it looks feasable" - but that if I decided it was just too much, that he could at least take comfort in the knowledge that his beloved X would live on in pieces of my (and other) X1/9s. He took it philosophically, and the car was mine. My dad came around with his pickup truck, we rented a tow dolly and took the car to my dad's house in Yelm.

It stayed there for a short time. I looked it over and decided that, although the car did have resto potential, it was just too big a job for ME to want to restore, as I already have the '75 for that! However, after hearing Carlo's story of love & loss, and his wish that someone would come along and give this X another chance at life on the road, I decided halfheartedly not to cut it up. Not long after that, I stumbled upon the black '80 X which I now own, at an abandoned vehicle auction in North Seattle. That car became my top priority, as it would require only mechanical work to be made roadworthy, where the '75 needs basically a full restoration. At the time, I was living on Greenwood in Seattle, and not only did I not have a garage, I didn't even have a driveway! Street parking was it, and it ain't easy to pull an engine in street parking in the middle of Seattle!
wink.gif
So I towed my '80 to Tino's place for the engine work. We made a deal where he would take Carlo's parts-car in part-trade for the work I would need on the '80. It was a fair deal I can say, so Carlo's car was taken to Tino's and parked under a plum tree in his yard.

There it has sat ever since. I occasionally have had second thoughts about that car (because I am so enthralled in the '75) and wondered if I shouldn't have just cut those panels off. Tino would always talk me out of it, bless him! He actually had intended to fix that car up for himself, even mentioned maybe doing a twincam conversion on it for fun. Anyway, he is a very busy guy, and just has never found the time to do anything with it. Then, obviously, you came along and scooped it up! There you have it, your car's history for the past 10 years.
happy.gif

(the pirelli's on it look good on the outside, belts showin on the inside.)

Definitely replace those tires! Who knows how old they are - I hear that Yokohama AVS Intermediates are the tire of choice for the X around here, but really any 185/60/13 tire would be better than any tire that old. Even Pirellis dryrot - I have the Les Schwab "free beef" 185/60s on my '80, they ain't Yokos, but they were damn cheap! :)

shifter is disconnected from the transmission (tino said he sold the part)

What part? The transmission or the linkage?

brake pedal comes back up slow.
clutch peadal doesn't come back up at all.

If you have sat as long as this car did, your pedals wouldn't want to move either!
wink.gif

right front headlight well lid is whacked, and the top of the well is as well. hood is wasted.

This is the damage that got the car parked all those years ago in Carlo's yard...

very minor front trunk rust, slightly less minor winshield frame rust (nothing rusted through by any stretch). drivers seat is shredded. rearview miror sucks. right door has rust along the bottom. both sides the weatherstripping connector hole at the back of the door is rusted out. other than the above, it's in decent shape.

Yep, that's the one. You fail to mention its redeeming qualities though! It has a beautiful dash, most of the interior is very good, good CD-91s, good glass (if I recall), and it had no critical structural rust (but since it has again sat for a long time since my inspection, I would suggest you thoroughly examine the chassis yourself) - That car is a wealth of good parts. So much so that I could not decide wether it was actually a parts car or not, except I knew that I could not dedicate the '75's time to restoring Carlo's car, therefore it was a "parts car" to me. As I said, it has potential, but more work than I had time to give it for sure. Carlo would be pleased if he knew someone finally is trying to save that car!
happy.gif

questions: found a brand new still in the bag timing belt in the rear trunk, but there's one on the motor... ?

Carlo was going to replace the t-belt way back when, but never could get the time. That belt is now quite old, throw it away.

hows the motor and tranny in this car? (i.e. should i get it running or does it have a thrown rod don't bother, or what?

I do not know. As I mentioned in that other thread down the forum, I don't know for sure the condition of the internals, I got it as a parts car and traded it off to him...I never saw it run and I never tried to run it. Carlo said it was running when he parked it, but that was so long ago there is just no telling. If I were serious about it, I would either pull the engine and just start dismantling it to see what I have to work with, or get a known good one to put in while you rebuild the one that came out. But that's just me.

i haven't even washed it yet.

...and boy is it filthy! You'll be picking plums out of the ductwork for days
wink.gif
- but don't feel bad, it could be much worse. I was looking at an X one time that had been sitting in the forest on the seller's land & it had a rat's nest inside the dash! Peeyew! At least your car will only smell like a plum
happy.gif

Glad someone is finally trying to save that car. Carlo would be proud!!! -Mac.

man it's a small world. I've worked on this car before. i remember carlos vaugeley, but i remember the rear alignment was frozen and it took forever to break loose.

hmm.

I'm going to try and get it started. (i'm not really wanting to do an engine swap right now, and i would assume that at worst, if it ran good when he parked it it's just going to have dry seals and leak oil like a seive, if it runs at all...

any tips or suggestions?

i have a nose cap and left front fender for it. possibly as many as 3
happy.gif
i'm sitting on a ton ( actually, about 10 tons) of chassis in various states of broken. most of the titles were lost in a fire, and as they wern't in my name and the legal owners aren't worht tracking down because i'm not going to fix them, i'll be cutting them up most likeley.

what panels do you need?
happy.gif

only the left front brake seems to be dragging (and it's dragging hard, it was smoking by time we got it home) and the car tracked straight anyway, seems to me it would want to dive left...

do you have access to welding equip, etc. (i horsetrade for all sorts of stuff, and i need to fix that right front corner, so lets make a deal)

my first step is going to be pull the winshield frame and clean up and nutra rust that area, then the door gasket clips...

then i'm going to try and start it i think..
i'm open to suggestions..

if it ran when parked then it's got to be eithier fuel or spark, and spark is easy to test.

anyone have any online resources for dealing with the fuel injection?

this is going to be fun
