X1/9 won't ever reach astronomical value. So keeping a good original low miles example without investing too much money seems to me a good advice.

If, like myself, you tend to follow your own path then, each has their own interest:

-1974 US Models
Hard to find in good shape. This is the only year with the small corner bumpers. They are for purist or racers.

-1975-78 US Models
There are a lot of them waiting in garages with slight body damages or head problems due to a bad timing belt. They are the less powerful X1/9 and the revised bumper was nearly unanimously declared ugly. But they are the cheapest to buy. Many will avoid them because of the 4 speed that will rev really high at highway speed.

-1979-80 carbureted
Redesign interior, 1500 cc, 5 speed, better looking bumpers. This is the model you are looking for if you intend to do some mechanicals modifications since it is easier to start with carbs to swap cam, headers,etc.

-1980 and up fuel injected
Same comments as above. The fuel injection is more torquey and powerful in stock trim. So if your intent is to keep the car stock or with only slight modifications, then the fuel injected cars are the best choice.
Later cars (Bertone instead of Fiat) had some interesting features (optional leather interior, rear spoiler,etc).

I owned X1/9 for 20 years. If I was to look for another one to keep it it would be one of the extremes:
- a 1974 model in top shape ...and price accordingly

-or a low miles 1987-1988 car with leather interior

In any case I would stay away from wrecked or rusty cars since there is plenty of nice bodies out there for less than the price you would pay for a body job (even if done in your backyard!)

On an FI X, the most bang for the buck is probably getting rid of the exhaust manifold. Unfortunatley, this isn't super easy.

You could look for a '74 exhaust manifold which is 4 into 2, or an IAP or PBS header. The problem is that for either of these, you will have to build your own exhaust system. With the '74 manifold, you could use the flange and downpipes (they are stainless steel) from the '74 exhaust system, have a shop make a collector and the rest of the system.

I don't know if a headr could be made to work with the original exhaust system, but you would probably want a better muffler and maybe bigger pipes anyway.

Don't make the system too short, keep a loop init like the original system.

[FONT=Trebuchet MS, Verdana, Tahoma, Arial]<!-- google_ad_section_start -->I have to admit I'm a little biased toward autocrossing, so you must first choose your goal. Are you looking for a daily driver, a Sunday cruiser, a show car, a good value, a race car, a mix of some of these?

Starting with a fuel injected car, I wouldn't look for more horsepower. Maybe just a hi-perf air filter, a better exhaust and Magnecor wires.

I would invest in the handling of the car. Yes the car is handling great from the beginning, and yes, it biggest drawback is the lack of hp. But lowering the car and getting a better suspension will provide the most grins per dollar! A little wider wheels and stickier tires (like the Toyo Proxes Ra-1)are also easily transferable to another X1/9 or your other car.

But before investing any money in hi-perf stuff, be sure you got a SAFE, straight and sound car. Electrical problems or stucked calipers must be eliminated before modifying your car.
