I was driving her home from school and Mac noticed that when I hit the brake pedal, the lights came on and never went back off. What is the cause of this?
Also, sometimes if I flip the pedal up a little higher with my toe, the lights go off. This is not a practical remedy when driving in heavy traffic and it doesn't always work!
What should I do???

the brake light switch is mounted so that when the brake pedal returns, it presses against the switch and turns the lights OFF.
So, the problem is either that the pedal return spring is missing, or the switch is adjusted wrong.
You don't really need a pedal return spring, so you could just adjust the switch. It has a plastic nut that you loosen, then you can screw the switch in and out. You'll want it further towards the pedal.
Give us an update on your car!
What else needs to be done before you can really use it?

As requested the scoop on the '74...
I can and have been able to play with the X a little, but she still needs a great deal.
On the way home from school (it was a long trip) she started to chug and die. I'm pretty sure my idle is out of adjustment as she idles almost at zero once she's warmed up. Before I adjust it though, I am STILL waiting for my tune-up parts to arrive. I believe this will solve the problem.
On the other hand I still have not had her at the house long enough to swap the mounts, which are in awful shape.
The last day she was at the school I noticed that my radiator hoses are about to explode so I certainly won't be driving her until I have had a chance to do some cooling system work. She gets really hot really fast so I have to stop a lot to cool her down.
This Winter, I will have to rebuild the trannie. I think the third gear synchro is shot! But I am pretty good at wiggling it into third without a crunch so I think I can put it off a little while.
Then there is the matter of RUST! Some of it really makes me nervous.
So to answer your question, I still have a bit of work to do, but it will be worth every busted knuckle!

She's got new calipers, pads & rotors all around, new masters, new lines, new t-belt & tensioner, new oil, new alt belt, new cv boots, electric fuel pump, fuel lines, tie rod ends, wheels, tires, lugbolts (!!), all filters, MTL, new new new all new!!!
There's a whole second list of parts she has but has not yet installed: mounts (all), tie rod sleeve, a whole box full of trim pieces & cosmetic bits... and the THIRD list of all the stuff which is on the way: I can't even list it!
That car, she's had it for 2 months & already the PO would probably not even recognize it... and she's showing no signs of letting up! -Mac.

She neglected to mention all the stuff she has done to that thing already! She has turned more wrench on her X lately than I have on mine! ( of course, I kill most of my shop time in here talking instead
She's got new calipers, pads & rotors all around, new masters, new lines, new t-belt & tensioner, new oil, new alt belt, new cv boots, electric fuel pump, fuel lines, tie rod ends, wheels, tires, lugbolts (!!), all filters, MTL, new new new all new!!!
There's a whole second list of parts she has but has not yet installed: mounts (all), tie rod sleeve, a whole box full of trim pieces & cosmetic bits... and the THIRD list of all the stuff which is on the way: I can't even list it!
That car, she's had it for 2 months & already the PO would probably not even recognize it... and she's showing no signs of letting up! -Mac.
