I can see how the cable is supposed to run, by looking at the other door, but I can see which end of the spool of cable goes in a particular direction...
The only way to tell this would be to pull apart the other door, and then I take the risk of having them both broken!
Anyone done this (if you don't remember, mine is an '83)?

I would advise you to just go on ahead & take the other door panel off, and compare one side to the other.
Look at it this way, it would be the fastest way to find out (in light of the fact that no one here has been able to help yet) and if you take the other panel out & suddenly that motor won't work, you can bet that it would have soon given out anyway, so you just saved yourself the future heartache, and can just deal with them both at once!

Is there room for you to stick a small mirror inside the good door, behind the motor, to see what obscured portion you need in order to tell what direction the cables are going?

I had to replace the cable on my window when I bought the car and it was no fun. I ended up winding the cable fully in one direction and then tie wrapping the wound end to the frame sleeves until I got it around all the pulleys.
Those window mechanisms are a real Italian delight.....good luck!!!

I tried Rolf's fix, and I'll give it another whirl.

I had to replace the cable on my window when I bought the car and it was no fun. I ended up winding the cable fully in one direction and then tie wrapping the wound end to the frame sleeves until I got it around all the pulleys.
Those window mechanisms are a real Italian delight.....good luck!!!
