happy.gif
It's obviously glued on and I plan on having a shop re-installing it, but I'm shure I can remove it myself.

Also my engine lid (1981) needs replacing but I haven't found one localy and having one shipped would be expensive. It seem to me it would be simple to fabricate a decent replacement, anyone has a plan on a picture of one you might have done.

Thanks
Mike

[FONT=Trebuchet MS, Verdana, Tahoma, Arial]<!-- google_ad_section_start -->The easiest way to remove the windshield is to use a box cutter to cut around the outter edge of the glass. You will have to cut deeply, all the way to the windshield frame behind the glass. Then, from inside the car, cut the back side. I use a sharpened putty knife for this, placing the blade against the glass to avoid the trim.

It is fairly slow going to work your way around both inside and out. I use several new razor blades in the box cutter and stop often to re-sharpen the putty knife with a file.

After working all the way around both inside and out, begin gently pressing on the glass from the inside to see if it is now loose. Be VERY carefull as it is VERY easy to crack the glass. Again: It is VERY easy to crack the glass. If the windshield doesn't move from light pressure, cut some more. Work your way around the edge slowly until it is loose all the way around. Then the entire windshield can be pushed out.

Be patient and it will come out without cracking. I have done several successfully.

Steve

[FONT=Trebuchet MS, Verdana, Tahoma, Arial]<!-- google_ad_section_start -->About your engine lid. If you want one that look original it will be hard to duplicate. I will suggest you will drive your car to a Fiat meet and buy one away from home. With only a set of sockets and a ratchet you will be able to swap it on the spot and throw the old one.

I removed my windshield using "piano wires". Be sure the wire can move around the windshield before trying to push on it. As Steve said, they are easy to break. Don't ask how we know.

[FONT=Trebuchet MS, Verdana, Tahoma, Arial]<!-- google_ad_section_start -->I cracked the sh*t out of my '75's windshield when I was trying to remove it, but luckily for me it was already cracked (which was why I was removing it!)

Since it was already cracked, I was just hoping to remove it without cracking it further, just for style points

but alas I really screwed the glass up in the process. Take these gentlemen's warnings seriously, and be SLOW, GENTLE AND VERY PATIENT when doing it.

I think Steve & Daniel have some great ideas here for getting the glass out in one piece. On some X1/9s (most likely if it is still the original install of the glass) there is a length of wire encased in the glass seal all the way around the windshield. It was put in there as an aid to get the glass out.

Unfortunately, the leads for connecting power to this wire are hanging out at the very center of the bottom of the windshield, on the inside of the car, so you have to take the dashboard out to even see if your car has the wire!

When I did my '75 I had the dash out anyway so it was no big deal. I pulled the inside trim strip off of the window frame and the ends of the wire were right there. In order to use them, you are supposed to hook each end of the wire to one side of +24 volts DC. I took 2 car batteries, connected them in series (1 battery's positive post connected to the other battery's negative post) then I hooked one end of the wire to each of the remaining posts of the batteries. What you get is one end of the wire on the + of battery #1, the other end of the wire on the - of battery #2, and don't forget the other 2 terminals are connected straight to each other.

What this does is to run +24 volts DC through the big windshield wire. The wire acts like a big resistor. Leave it connected for a few minutes. The wire gets hot & (in theory) it softens the seal to a gooey consistency, so it is easier to cut through with a boxknife or piano wire or what have you.

Don't be afraid when the windshield seal starts to really stink! Bluech! It smells bad but if the wire is present it does help soften the seal.

My only mistake was that I was just not patient enough. About halfway through the job I decided to see if I could just push the glass the rest of the way out without continuing the time-consuming boxknife process. I pushed, and it came out alright, but in a hundred pieces

So take Steve & Daniel's advice and DO be gentle!

[FONT=Trebuchet MS, Verdana, Tahoma, Arial]<!-- google_ad_section_start -->I forgot to mention that the big windshield wire is not necessary to use, just helpful (marginally) if it is actually there on your car. Like I said, some cars have the wire & some don't. Usually if your car already is on its 2nd windshield you can assume the wire is not in there. Whether it is or not, you can do just fine without it. I just used it because it was there & my dash was already out. It was fun and did soften the seal a little bit, but was not incredibly helpful, so FWIW you can do fine even without using it.

But what I really wanted to add is this: no matter how you are taking the glass out, be VERY CAREFUL around the corners of the glass. I mean not the edges, but the corners: lower-left, lower-right, upper-left, upper-right of the windshield glass. I found the glass cracked the easiest right around the corners. Whatever you do, resist the urge to stuff any tool under there to pry up with! RESIST THAT URGE and just keep at it with the knife or wire etc.

If you are hoping to re-use the glass, you want to really be easy on the corners. Even a little crack at a corner will eventually spider out across the rest of the glass. -Mac.
