The whistle (like a jug band off in the distance) came and went for a few minutes and then there was a pop and lots of smoke. While coasting to the side of the freeway I noticed that I had lost my brakes and had to use the handbrake to stop. The smoke was coming from the right rear hub area and the paint on the wheel around the lug bolts was blistered from the heat. The car still rolls freely and the wheel does not appear to be seized at all.
What do you supposed happened? Has this happened to anyone else?
I will be attempting a repair in the next week or so and we'll see who guessed right.

After awhile it got so hot that either the caliber or the pads, or the rotor exploded, damaging the caliber and causing the mess of hydraulic fluid.
That's why you don't have any other brakes... the only thing that stopped you was the emergency cable pulling in the left rear.
It RR spins free... 'cause there's nuttin there to stop the disc any more. The whistle was the rotor heating up and the pads squealing at speed.
So what do I win???

p.s. I just went thru a 124 that had a similar problem. (their brakes are IDENTICAL and interchangeable with an X.) The RR was FROZEN, LR wouldn't OPERATE. In fact, only the RF was stopping the car!<!-- google_ad_section_end -->

There are 2 pistons in the master cylinder of the brakes (safety measure so if one end fails you still got the other). So I can see why one caliper blowing up would reduce your brake force, but can't see why braking would die unless the other set was dead already.
Maybe it's not back/front seperate pistons but kitty corner pairs, but the principal stands.
My guess was that your caliper was siezed, just barely locked up against the wheel. My X had a buildup on the slave piston that would keep it pressed against the wheel, until I yanked the wheel back and forth to unlock it (thank god for lack of rigidity, in that case at least).
The thing overheated hot enough to boil brake fluid (or melt a hose or seal). Blew the line most likely, which sprayed brake fluid everywhere hot, which created the smoke.<!-- google_ad_section_end -->

If you lose pressure on the rear brake circuit, due to loss of fluid or other failure, you will lose the fronts as well. The reason for this is the master cylinder is a two circuit, single cylinder design that creats pressure for the front circuit by pressing against the rear circuit. This is a design typical of the period.

However, pedal travel becomes the issue. There may not be enough pedal travel to generate pressure on the front circuit. In most cases, if the rear circuit fails, the pedal goes to the floor with only slight (if any) front brake response.
This is also why you always bleed the rear circuit first. Because of the lack of pressure, it takes much longer to get the fronts to bleed if you do them first.

The whistle (like a jug band off in the distance) came and went for a few minutes and then there was a pop and lots of smoke. While coasting to the side of the freeway I noticed that I had lost my brakes and had to use the handbrake to stop. The smoke was coming from the right rear hub area and the paint on the wheel around the lug bolts was blistered from the heat. The car still rolls freely and the wheel does not appear to be seized at all.
What do you supposed happened? Has this happened to anyone else?
I will be attempting a repair in the next week or so and we'll see who guessed right.

After awhile it got so hot that either the caliber or the pads, or the rotor exploded, damaging the caliber and causing the mess of hydraulic fluid.
That's why you don't have any other brakes... the only thing that stopped you was the emergency cable pulling in the left rear.
It RR spins free... 'cause there's nuttin there to stop the disc any more. The whistle was the rotor heating up and the pads squealing at speed.
So what do I win???

p.s. I just went thru a 124 that had a similar problem. (their brakes are IDENTICAL and interchangeable with an X.) The RR was FROZEN, LR wouldn't OPERATE. In fact, only the RF was stopping the car!<!-- google_ad_section_end -->

There are 2 pistons in the master cylinder of the brakes (safety measure so if one end fails you still got the other). So I can see why one caliper blowing up would reduce your brake force, but can't see why braking would die unless the other set was dead already.
Maybe it's not back/front seperate pistons but kitty corner pairs, but the principal stands.
My guess was that your caliper was siezed, just barely locked up against the wheel. My X had a buildup on the slave piston that would keep it pressed against the wheel, until I yanked the wheel back and forth to unlock it (thank god for lack of rigidity, in that case at least).
The thing overheated hot enough to boil brake fluid (or melt a hose or seal). Blew the line most likely, which sprayed brake fluid everywhere hot, which created the smoke.<!-- google_ad_section_end -->

If you lose pressure on the rear brake circuit, due to loss of fluid or other failure, you will lose the fronts as well. The reason for this is the master cylinder is a two circuit, single cylinder design that creats pressure for the front circuit by pressing against the rear circuit. This is a design typical of the period.

However, pedal travel becomes the issue. There may not be enough pedal travel to generate pressure on the front circuit. In most cases, if the rear circuit fails, the pedal goes to the floor with only slight (if any) front brake response.
This is also why you always bleed the rear circuit first. Because of the lack of pressure, it takes much longer to get the fronts to bleed if you do them first.
