Exhaust System Posts

I've received a few requests about how I made my exhaust since I posted pics of my X. Well, I am attaching links for the original postings, as well reposting here because the Photobucket links don't work anymore.

Exhaust Madness

At least that what my wife calls it! I've been messing around with several different exhausts that exit thru a central location with twin outlets. I started off with a Ford Windstar muffler that I modified for twin outlets, then opened it up and packed it with muffler insulating wrap to quiet it down (note the many welding lines on the outside of the muffler). However, fine particles of the insulation would give the back of my X a "metal-flake" appearance, so I yanked it off.

I liked the simplicity of the Ford Windstar muffler to adapt to a central outlets design, so I built another one using a Walker Quiet Flow muffler.

However, I didn't like the way the exhaust flowed thru the Ford Windstar muffler, it just didn't seem very efficient. So, I modified an earlier exhaust system i made up using a cross-flow, twin outlet muffler from a late 80's Camaro. Because the outlets came out the ends, I welded tight-radius, mandrel bent 180 degree exits, into tight-radius, mandrel bent 90 degree exits, then out the rear grill. The result is outstanding, low rumble at idle, moderate sound at cruising speed, and a full-on wail when you really run it up in rpm's.

Exhaust Part III

So, being snowed in with nothing to do, I went out to my garage and fashioned up an entirely new exhaust that exits thru the rear grille. I made up a base flange to bolt up to the Euro (74 style) dual outlet exhaust manifold, then plumbed that thru 1 1/2" pipes into a Megs Exhaust collector.

I attached the collector to a short radius 90 degree 2 1/4" elbow, then directly into a AP muffler for a 1995-2003 Ford Windstar. I attached hanger dowels on both sides, then welded one stainless exhaust tip to the existing outlet, then opened up another outlet and attached the second stainless exhaust tip. I welded matching hanger dowels to a brace I put under the trunk floor, attached the hangers and welded everything up.

I modified the rear grille to have matching openings for the tips

And here's what it looks like finished

And here's how it sounds

Exhaust Part II

So, after trying to quiet down my initial custom exhaust with dual outlets exiting thru the rear grille with motorcycle baffles, I tried a different approach. I made each of these with a 3/8" flange, twin 1 1/2" pipes into a Meg's Exhaust collector, then a 2'' down pipe swaged up to 2 1/4" to go into the muffler.

Initially, I used a Magnaflow-type chambered muffler - TOO LOUD!

I even fitted motorcycle baffles in the outlets - Still Too Loud!

This exhaust exited thru the modified rear grille

When that didn't work, I looked at a huge muffler catalog and found the following AP crossflow/transverse muffler for a 82-90 Camaro or Firebird

And here's how it looks

What it sounds like now
