Dean Scharer

True Classic
So this is the “Free” car from Craigslist that was 12 miles from my house. No title, no engine/transmission, no soft top, and left outside in the Pacific Northwest rain for several years uncovered.

On the way home, I stopped to spray it off. She actually isn’t in that bad of shape.

Now to find out how bad the floorboards are.

Since the carpet is coming out, I might as well pull the brake/clutch assembly. Despite having all the proper tools, I finally had to cut the lines. This assembly is probably the worst one to date. Good thing I have spares!

Since I have the other three cars and I’ve done Montecarlo bumpers on each, I’ve decided to keep this mostly stock Scorpion. The engine however will be a 2.0 because I have one on the shelf ready to go. The brakes will be upgraded and I will put a bubble top on it because it makes more sense here in the Pacific Northwest.

Love to see it! If you need any stock parts mine was the same color, you can have my old soft top, I believe its in fair condition I can take some pics next week.

Dean: Thanks for rescuing this relic. May I suggest you make it a cosmetic replica of the 1980 Watkins Glen 6 hour winner. Lancia Beta Montecarlo Turbo. Driven by Riccardo Patrese and Hans Heyer. Fit it with a stock 1.8 with a lumpy cam and a minimal muffler (who wants a $30,000 race engine?) Good luck finding a set of the correct centerlock hubs and wheels. Pirelli will probably give you a free set of tires if you show it at C & C or car shows. I saw this one at the San Francisco auto show Thanksgiving weekend in 1980. Make sure you have the air intake screens on the rear wing struts perfect. They are Italian Art at its industrial best. ( for more fun, look up "Riccardo Patrese drives his wife crazy" on UTube.)

Working to remove the carpet and have not figured out how to remove the gas pedal. It’s extremely corroded so I was wondering if anyone can keep me from having to re-invent the wheel?

The gas pedal is held on by 2, possibly 3 fasteners on the side of the central tunnel. 10mm nuts. I don't have a better shot, and I'm not sure what the resizing is going to do, but I circled the 2 fasteners I am sure of in this picture. I will email you the full size picture if this is not big enough.

Thanks Pete! Carpet is out.

I think this one faired remarkably well considering it had no top, no cover, and sat out in the Seattle area rain for at least 10 years. But right off the bat I noticed the side rear windows weren’t even sealed any more.
