My guess is that euro 1500s (which is what you have, right?) have the same manifold as the 1300s.

All our later cars had a 4-into-1 exhaust manifold (like the rare sprinkling of Fuel Injected cars you might see outside the USA)...

What we call the "74 exhaust manifold" here in the USA, though, is probably no big deal to anyone overseas, because that piece is exactly the same as the 4-into-2 exhaust manifold that is used on all carbed X1/9s elsewhere in the world.

So it's special to us, but standard for everyone else. The upside is, if America ever starts to run short on '74 exhaust manifolds, we can always look overseas to find a million more!

I always hear you guys speak of "Europe" and "European X1/9s" as a single entity.. despite lots of effort the last 50 years, this is not true, especially not on the car market (since every country here has a national car industry, they all want to protect it by favouring domestic products in legislation, etc, etc, etc). But you have had the same with Japanes motorcycles, right?

Because of my lifelong interest in X1/9s, I have traveled over much of this continent, and even a little overseas (and will again) to learn more about the mind-boggling variety X1/9s out there in the world.

But, I have to admit that I have spent most of my life in North America, and thus I know less about the various details of X1/9s in general that were offered in most overseas countries.

This is the first time I have heard of carbed non-US Xs having been sold with the 4-to-1 exhaust overseas, but I suppose it is not too surprising - it is hard to even try to know all the juicy details about X1/9s sometimes, especially considering some of the weird & often unpredictable parts/design/market changes that have occurred over the years and in different countries with these cars.

When I first became truly interested in these cars, I used to think ALL X1/9s had the same setups as US-spec cars. Then I travelled overseas & learned that the majority of these cars outside the US never even got fuel injection! - or electronic ignition!!

That was a surprise back then, but when I learned later that even the last year 'Gran Finale' cars in the UK were still using what Americans call the "'74 manifold", I was amazed!

It was also interesting to see how the UK-spec 1500s (and maybe others as well) have the rear license plate lights integrated into the rear bumper surround, shining up at the plate (unlike US-specs where there is a light pod on either side of the plate) because the license plate is too big for the US style lights to fit there! I NEVER KNEW THAT!

Then, I learned that some of the FI cars were sold outside the NA market, 50 in Australia, several in Germany, Italy etc... many more than I thought (but still not many in relative terms)...

I have even heard of completely US-spec late FI models (even with the US-spec parking lights!) having been sold in Italy near the end and being called the "sunshine edition"!

I have utterly resigned to the fact that I could spend a hundred years doing this and I would still never learn all there is to know about X1/9s across the globe.

So, anytime someone can offer a tidbit of exceptional information, like you did here Felix, I appreciate it. You just saved me from having to fly overseas again to find that out!

As for calling everything "Europe", that is mainly my way of over-simplifying the many markets in which the car was sold, for ease of my own explanations. If you think my posts are LONG now, just imagine if I tried to address each variance of the car in all the European countries! Yikes!!

I do not mean to sound insulting to all the individual countries when I say "European X1/9s", it is just a convenient (to me) way to talk about the cars.

This is because I have found (my opinion here) that the world of X1/9s basically seems to fall into roughly 4 distinct categories:

North American spec X1/9s

UK spec X1/9s

European spec X1/9s

Australian spec X1/9s

Like I said, this is over-simplifying the truth, but it makes it much easier for me to think of it all, for myself. It is true that "Euro spec" is not entirely accurate, because details about the car do change even from country to country inside Europe.

BUT then again, details about the car even change from region to region inside North America (!!) so the prospect of my ever being able to truly get it all down is highly unlikely

I have finally resolved to the policy of just doing my best to classify the cars for myself into the smallest & simplest number of world market groups, and accepting the unavoidable fact that there will always be exceptions to what I think is true, and that I may never really have the whole puzzle put together in my lifetime

As far as I can tell, the Euro Xs use lots of "74" specs. Some of these are thew air cleaner, the exhaust system(exists on the left) AND the manifolds.

It is fun to see all the differences. The Sunshine, was just a US model that was moving slowly at the time out of US dealers showrooms.

There are 2 rectangular holes in the black filling strip between the bumper and body and a pretty generic looking light unit sitting underneath the holes. The holes look like they have been cut by hand (ie edges are pretty rough). I would have no hesistation making my own with a key-hole saw!

I can take a digital photo and EMail to you if you want to see it yourself. (May take a day or 2, tho)

I had two '74s to check, some misc unknown manifolds, some 1500 with EGR fittings and some 1300. All had smaller ports than the '74 intake.

Since then I've heard of "chemically porting" the intake. Block off the headside with a metal plate and fill the intake ports with muratic acid. Don't recall how long to leave it in. I haven't tried this, but the fellow who told me was a longtime SCCA IT racer in an X. No names, since it is illegal for the class.
