[FONT=Trebuchet MS, Verdana, Tahoma, Arial]<!-- google_ad_section_start -->The speedo isn't particularly accurate over about 80mph in most cases, not to mention at low speeds where it tends to under-read by a dangerous margin.

I've seen 125mph on the clock of my 1500 - enough to scare the life out of the fast-lane hogs of the local motorways. However having driven my Integra down the same road at similar speeds, I can safely say that the X1/9 WASN'T hitting 125mph - the difference was quite noticible.

Something of a disappointment I admit, but it certainly looked (and felt) good from the driving seat of my X.

You only have to do a few sums based on the stated cd of the X to work out you need MUCH more than 85bhp (in my car at least) to hit 125mph - more like 120bhp! A good tailwind WILL help reducing the drag substantially and at these speeds every little bit counts as the speed:drag ratio is essentially exponential rather than linear. Another 20mph (140mph) would require an estimated 170bhp just to counteract the drag!

[FONT=Trebuchet MS, Verdana, Tahoma, Arial]<!-- google_ad_section_start -->My X speedo was accurate, I paced 2 people with the same reading (about 100, when my X would go no faster). Seems like the easiest way to do it, although it's useful to make sure your friends are accurate as well (i.e. have more than one).
How much difference does weight make on top speed? From the physics I've taken, I know it shouldn't matter that much, but from my Bike, I know it definently does.
My bike had 88 hp at the back wheel when new (17 yrs and 22K mi ago), but it does 125 quite easily, and I've hit 135 while still pulling. Bike should have a horrible CD. Why is it so easy to go fast? Just guessing the CD (it's a VF700 interceptor) with me squatting below the 4 in. windshield, I should be able to go nowhere near that fast. Although this could be an innacurate speedo (sure feels like 135 though!!!). I realize there's a small frontal area, but you have the odd shape from me, the open front wheel, the radiators etc.<!-- google_ad_section_end -->

[FONT=Trebuchet MS, Verdana, Tahoma, Arial]<!-- google_ad_section_start -->It isn't just the X1/9 that has an inaccurate speedo, the whole design concept for the old magneto driven models was flawed. They are only accurate at a particular speed, below that speed the reading is actually lower than expected, above that speed and it the reading is higher.

Only the introduction of digital speedos (not necessarily digital readouts) provides anything approaching an accurate reading and even then the actual dial mechanism is slightly suspect and has a tendency to be slow in reaction to changes in speed (looking back at my Honda again, there was a definite 0.5second delay when changing gear, the speed would continue to rise even though the clutch pedal was on the floor and the gearbox in neutral - but only for that 0.5 second).

There are a number of other variables to take into consideration as well, tyre wear, or worse still incorrect tyres result in a false reading. The difference in speedo reading between a car with new tyres and one with worn tyres is enough to be noticible and at high speeds the difference is significant. Factor in the "alternative" tyre sizes that are commonly fitted and the situation is usually worse.

The situation of the bike needs closer examination. The weight difference only alters the acceleration - not the terminal velocity. Smaller engined bikes especially suffer a significant performance hit from the extra weight. The cd on bikes is usually pretty awful and while it has improved dramatically in the last 5 years it still isn't all that good. The big advantage IS the small frontal area - you have to remember that this also has a big impact on the drag. There is also the matter of drag being dependent on more than just the frontal area - the cd on bikes is actually quite variable. Ducking down behind the screen reduces frontal area and improves the profile. The advancing pressure wave isn't given the opportunity to break (if you do it right - take a look at the adaptations to the gp suits - all sorts of aerodynamic aids have been introduced, espeically along the arms and down the back). It isn't just how you punch a hole in the air that counts, it's how you leave it as well!

Finally there is also the matter of gearing. Again I will use my good ol' Honda as an example (mainly because it was very carefully designed). The car had a terminal velocity of 143mph (with no headwind), the car just happened to develop 197 bhp (on a good day). Is it a coincidence that the engine produced peak power when the car hit 143mph in 5th? Putting the car through the usual modelling package and you find that at 143mph the drag developed is almost the exact equivalent of 197bhp. Taking the wing of the back would have reduced the drag by a healthy chunk, but the car would only manage a couple more mph as the power begins to tail off after that point (and stability would have gone to pot!)

My thrills come from the 60 - 85 mph range on side streets through traffic and the local "twisties"!

(A typical side street here is 6 lanes wide...)

I love to see folks try and keep up with me on the freeway cloverleafs when it says slow to 20 mph and I scream through them coming down from 60!!!! HA!

I think if you really wanna look into top speed, ya need to look at some serious mods or another car.

I just LOVE this car for what it is and what it CAN DO!

[FONT=Trebuchet MS, Verdana, Tahoma, Arial]<!-- google_ad_section_start -->Hey, I used to travel over to our place near Bend a lot so I had lot of open road. Then I got my big ticket for 95mph and after talking to the local judge and receiving a LARGE fine, I also have my fun between 60-80 mph. I learned a lesson I guess. Thanks for the advice about the speedo everybody I'll test it next time I'm on I-5. Whatever the top speed of my X is it felt stable and glued to the road for such a small car. As far as drag cd lets talk about my 128 wagon, I did some mods on the engine so the 1300 was maybe up 15 HP from stock it seemed to make little difference at 75 mph as far as rpm's and how hard the motor was working on the flying shoebox. Man I miss that car I regret selling it to this day. Gotta go.<!-- google_ad_section_end -->

[FONT=Trebuchet MS, Verdana, Tahoma, Arial]<!-- google_ad_section_start -->A six speed is certainly do-able... ...but not really practical. You would probably have to give up reverse as that selector is shared by the 5th gear shifting fork. 6th would have to go on the other side of 5th and use the same fork and slider.

You would have to make two new shafts, extension housing and the gear itself. Lots of work and money.

Top speed is an interesting question though. If you want to check the speedo error, read the rpm then do the math to multiply the rpm through the gear ratio and final drive ratio and then divid the rollout of the tire (measure with a tape measure) into one mile.

I once had my 1300 X clock by a Kansas State Trouper at 106 on I-70. This was on fat 185/60 race rubber, not the best tire for maximizing top speed. My 1500 autocrosser was clocked (again with radar but this time at an event) at 115. And it had more left in it.

My '74 1300 hits a wall at 7700 rpm in 4th. I haven't done the math but I would estimate about 115-120. The car will turn 400 more rpm with the headlight down, the windows up and the top on.

There is a photo of the speedometer hitting 115 in the latest RICAMBI. I read that a stock X with stock tire sizes would do 18.5 mph per 1000 rpms. This seems to be fairly close to accurate.

I was driving down the highway last night and was doing around 45-50 mph when I passed a radar warning trailer. It showed me doing exactly what my speedo said I was doing. Of course that is around 50 mph, not very high speeds.<!-- google_ad_section_end -->

You could end up with a stronger transaxle with 6-speeds and a Quaiffe differential.

http://www.spiretech.com/~vw6spd/

It really isn't as hard as it sounds. The shift linkage is operated similar to the stock Fiat components, the clutch arm would require some modification to mate up with the stock slave cylinder, or you could get more creative and use a different slave cylinder or shift linkage.
