With the help of a friend who has just about every issue of Road & Track from back in the day, He photo copied these articles from 1984 & 1987 when the X1/9 dominated Show Room Stock racing, class SSC for years starting in 1983.
Here is the article from 1984, note Porsche ran a "Prototype 944" and did well. It should be noted that stock production Porsche 944's don't do well at 24 hours of LeMons. I suspect the cars that did well back in the day would also do well at 24 hours of LeMons..
Then in 1987.. Kim Baker's team returned to Nelson Ledges with a Alcan Aluminum body x1/9 running in prototype class. Alcan had 5 of these cars built by Bertone after they announced this body production process. Sadly, Innes Ireland crunched it.. One might wonder what ever happened to these Aluminum bodies X1/9s.
This has become a forgotten bit of X1/9 racing history..
Images of this event can be found here along with finishing position.
