can i use the 78 axle-shafts

[FONT=Trebuchet MS, Verdana, Tahoma, Arial]<!-- google_ad_section_start -->Hey Bob,
I will be installing a '82 1500 and 5-speed in my '78 in the morning. Having the two Engine\tranny's sitting right beside each other, I wasn't able to see any potential problems mounting either one in my '78.

If you want I can give you more info once I get the engine and tranny bolted in the car.

Hope this will help,

It is a pretty easy swap. There should be no problems. That is assuming the 5 spd is in good condition.

[FONT=Trebuchet MS, Verdana, Tahoma, Arial]<!-- google_ad_section_start -->this is sort of a "convenient" last resort
to my 4-speed woes (described in another thread).

my brother-in-law has an '87 that he has
parked.

he claims the clutch is shot
and i tend to believe him since he described
symptoms similar to mine.

my clutch refused to disengage.
the pedal was low to the floor
when i got the car last june. i suppose it got
progressively worse. couldn't adjust it out anymore.

anyway...
i just bought the 4-speed clutch and throw-out bearing, etc.

was hoping the 5-speed could be used with
the 1300 clutch & flywheel.

i heard that there are conversion techniques
to use the 1300 style clutch and/or release mechanism in order to extend clutch/release bearing life.... ???

now to adress jason's reply:

i'd be curious to see how that goes.

i could alway do a wholesale swap of engine
and tranny.

but my 1300 only has 56K on it and no oil leaks
yet. whereas joe's '87 has >100K and leaks
a quart a week. it is also fuel injected.

now i have no problem with high milage
(most of my spiders had near 200K before
retirement) or EFI or converting EFI to carb.

i'm just not ready for a large-scale project.
don't have the time any more... ;(

you guys are inspiring me, though.

gonna have to tell the wife spring cleaning
may have to wait....

[FONT=Trebuchet MS, Verdana, Tahoma, Arial]<!-- google_ad_section_start -->Well guy's,
So far this morning.....The engine is mounted ( suspension and axles are dangling ). I did run into a few MINOR difficulties though.

1. Didn't expect to have to swap out water pump and water inlet (left side of head).

2. Also, mounting of the alternator was different, so swapped the mounts.

3. Had to get a smaller alternator belt as a result of the 1500's crank pully being slightly smaller.

4. I wanted to use the 1500's exhaust anyway so that was no problem.

5. When lifting the engine\tranny into the car, I had to remove (permenately) a metal panel in the driver's side wheel well. The 5-speed is a little longer.

That's as far as I have gotten today, I'm taking a break right now.

I don't recall if I had mentioned earlier, that I was keeping the carb. Swiching to FI would be more than I wanted to tackle for now. Not to mention, the parts car had sat for a while (71K miles) and the injectors are stuck.

I also swiched out the distributor. I wanted to make this project as easy as possible.

In case you were wondering why I wanted to do the swap......1300 had over 100K, rear main seal shot (leaked about 2 quarts in 50 miles), rings were bad...could only safely hit 3500 RPM, major blow-by....gummed up carb, both ball joints? at the end of the suspension arms were worn, reverse gear was shot, throw out bearing sqealed, cv boot leaked almost as much as the engine!

When I get it all done and back on the road, I'll let everyone know how it runs and drives.

Talk to ya later,
Jason<!-- google_ad_section_end -->

You can use the 1300 clutch and flywheel if you change the ring gear to the 1500 unit. That is not an easy swap though. You must drive the old ring gear off, put the flywheel in the freezer overnight, heat the 1500 ring gear in the oven to 450 degrees, then fit them together before the temperatures equalize.

You will then be able to use the 1300 starter too.

Normally, things baked in the oven "rise". Sorry, couldn't resist
wink.gif

Cooking stock (actually they were cut down stock springs) worked pretty well. I compressed them completely to coil bind with a home made compressor that used a length of threaded rod, a pair of cut down spring perches and a couple of large washers and nuts. I compressed the spring completely and popped them in the oven at 450 degrees for a couple of hours. Then removed them and let them cool over night before releasing them from the compressor.

I could typically get an inch or so off them that way. But if you are wanting to lower your car, cutting the stock springs is a better solution. A coil or so cut from the front and half to three quarters cut from a rear gives you some extra spring rate, where cooking does not. I was using stock springs cut to give the desired rate and then installed on the stock perches along with spacers to get the ride height where I wanted it. Shrinking the springs in the oven gave me some extra room for adjustment that I didn't have with out it.

[FONT=Trebuchet MS, Verdana, Tahoma, Arial]<!-- google_ad_section_start -->We tried it with my roommate's Spider springs a long time ago. He wanted the car a little lower but not stiffer since he is not the performance type.

We also used 450 deg. I think that we either didn't have them in there long enough or, more likely, didn't compress enough. We weren't near coil bind.
We were using normal spring compressors.
