I am seriously considering flying quite a distance and checking out a (owner described) mint 1979 carb 1.5, always gargaged, less then 15k orig miles, owned by some retirees.

Assuming it is in mint shape, how much am I giving up by going with the carb, vs. waiting and locating a FI model ?

One confusing thing is I have R&T articles that show FASTER 0-60 times (11.1 sec) for the 1.5 carb model, vs. 12.4 for the 1.5 FI ? This has always seemed strange considering the 1.5 Carb is supposed to have 67 vs. the 1.5 FI 75 ponies.

The carb is fine. Pretty darned flexable for jet adjustments and stuff. I used to hit every Weber carb in the junkyard to pull out the jets and built up a little stash great for tuning and tweaking.

The L-jet is very nice, quite consistent, and from what I've seen it's very reliable. Dead simple in operation. I've heard some folks in SoCal had issues with the EFI brains getting hot and the car stalling, maybe it's a climate issue or maybe its a cali emissions deal?

Both are great engines.

In my honest opinion, I would decide based on body condition & electricals over the carb or FI system.

[FONT=Trebuchet MS, Verdana, Tahoma, Arial]<!-- google_ad_section_start -->Go with the Fuel Injected. In 14 years it has been nothing other than a joy to have. Pretty much trouble free and easy to diagnose if you do have a problem. Usually it's just some sensor that needs cleaning.
Also, 79's have a carb and 1500cc engine. If I am not mistaken, there are 79 only parts, which are hard to locate. I had a friend back in the 80's who had suck problems. My other friend with a 79 FI model(CA Only) did not.

[FONT=Trebuchet MS, Verdana, Tahoma, Arial]<!-- google_ad_section_start -->....all other things rarely are equal! In stock form, the 79 is rather less than satisfying. The emission controls and small carb don't help, and provide plenty of opportunity for things to go wrong.

The FI motor gives a little more HP, but more importantly, it has more torque and a lower, broader power band to boot. Also far less sensitive to cold/hot/damp weather.

That said, there are a number of things than can be done fairly easily and cheaply to improve the carb version quite a bit. Removing most of the emissions devices ( if feasible in your area - most of them are likely no longer functional anyway), adding a 34 DMTR carb, header, and perhaps a mild cam will make a huge difference.

The FI cars are pretty decent in stock form, and the late model 84-> versions are much nicer inside too.

Much depends on how much you want to do, and what's out there.

All this is of course my opinion only - there are some who are quite happy with their stock 79/80 models - no offense to them intended!

We dont have any emisions equipment on our cars so see a healthy 85 bhp from them, 0-60 in 10 seconds, that is if the gearbox is up to it

In March 1985, Autocar(British) got 10.8 0-60 and 17.0 quarter, European spec car, same carb 1500. I think most of the acceleration I experience in my 78 is merely between my ears. There are probably enough junkyard X's to find an FI head and system to do a retrofit to a 1979. I feel I can recover my investment in mechanical repairs. Body repairs, interiors, etc. are lost money. Are the cars cheap enough to buy both? The later Bertones are much more plush...cloth or leather interiors with electric windows. The 1979 is still a Fiat product. Cheap vinyl, etc. I was stunned by the difference between my 78 and Perry's 87. My door shuts "Clannnggg" ...his shuts "Thunk!" Both fun to drive, but the '86 1500 has more torque, smoother accelleration, etc. If that '79 with the low miles ends up being all that (and a bag o' chips), may be too nice to pass up. The '79 that was tested ended up being sort of an anomaly that the R&T guys never could explain. I share the opinion of some of the other guys in this thread, the Bertone models are higher quality. If you want to go racing, then the carb is the way to go.

Personally, both of my cars are not FI. Both have dual carbs and both are really only for racing, but are still street legal.

Depends on your use.

One last thing, I found the an FI car with a final drive lower than 3.7x to 1 is a really fast car. I owned one in Phoenix for awhile, it would easly cruse at 90 around 4200rpm. Nice highway vechical.

FI is good for the daily driver, still tuneable but more limited/expensive. They do pass emisions tests a little easier, if that matters. Yes, tests of the era showed the carbed cars were faster, but they were wrong. Actually, FI cars got a lot more torque (more usable) and you will need to rev a lot the carbed cars to keep up with the FI ones.

Carbureted cars may be easier to deal with in the past when nobody know how was working FI but now the situation has changed a lot. But carbed cars still got an edge if you inted to modify the mechanics (cams, exhaust, etc.) since it is more tuneable.

If you intend to keep the car stock, a late FI car might be the best choice. BUT I wouldn't let go a good deal on a carbed car, especially if it is a 1500 cc (1979-early 1980).
