It had been out of commision in a salvage yard for a number of years and I have been resurecting it,using an 86 as a donor parts car. After rebuilding almost the entire drive train and getting just about everything else together on the car, one of the last steps was to add water and antifreeeze. After adding about 1-1/2 gallons of coolant to the tank, I could hear water running on to the garage floor. I looked under the car an witnessed a very sad sight. Water/antifreeze was running out of each end of the housing surrounding the two radiator pipes running up the center of the car. Apparently, winter frost had split one or both of the pipes open.
I am open to any suggestions on replacing or repairing the pipes. The good news is that I do have a good set of them available from the donor parts car. I also have an air chisel that can cut through the housing or welds as needed. Any one out there have any experience in doing this kind of surgery? I would love to hear any suggestions on the best approach to getting this accomplished. Many thanks

You can do it however you please, but I have heard it is best to just cut it straight along the bottom center, front to back, and peel either side away, opening it like a long clamshell, if you will. Then you remove the pipes, and just about any exhaust shop could bend & fab replacements. When the new ones go in, you bend the shielding back over them & weld it shut again. That's basically it.
PS, I have heard of some folks just removing the shielding altogether, while others weld it back. I don't know whether it is structurally required, I think it is there mainly to prevent road debris from flying up and hitting the pipes directly. In any case, whether you reattach the thing is up to you. -Mac.

This car has,in addition to the speedo cable, an A/C line attached to the driver's side of the shielding "tunnel". I do plan to split the shielding as you have described, but in considering the stuff that is attached to the driver's side of the shielding, I thought would split it along the passenger side corner, rather than down the middle. This may make it easier to weld back together along the corner and minimize disturbing or melting the speedo cable and A/C line. I also plan to use the piping from the donor car, assuming there is no rust or damage. I do know the cooling system was sound with no leaks on the donor car. I wonder if the cooling pipes are welded as well into the body, or just sitting there.

The first one I cut down the middle but welding it back up from underneath was a rotten jog unless you like to get burned. The second time I got some radiator hose and simple attached two lengths down each side of the tunnel. The hose fits up tight to the bottom of the car and is tucked in alongside the tunnel so it is quite well protected. Works fine and took less than an hour to do. I took an air chisel to the donor car and extracted all three pipes which were in very nice condition. Then, considering how ratty the housing was after removing them on the donor car, I opted (at least for now) not to cut into the housing. Instead, I banded the two larger pipes directly underneath the bad ones. For the heater pipe,I cut a hole near the front passenger side of the housing, sawed off the heater pipe and ran a piece of heater hose from the engine, along the tunnel and connected it to the sawn off piece leading to the heater. Oh yeah, to make matters worse, I found that I still had another leak. The pipe running above the tunnel, along side the shifter rod, also had split from frost. I removed that pipe from the donor car and layed it in on top of the defective one. One other problem was then found. The coolant tank was also leaking at the dimple area half way up, probably from frost as well. I replaced it with one from the donor car and FINALLY sealed up the cooling system. It had been out of commision in a salvage yard for a number of years and I have been resurecting it,using an 86 as a donor parts car. After adding about 1-1/2 gallons of coolant to the tank, I could hear water running on to the garage floor. I looked under the car an witnessed a very sad sight. Water/antifreeze was running out of each end of the housing surrounding the two radiator pipes running up the center of the car. Apparently, winter frost had split one or both of the pipes open.
I am open to any suggestions on replacing or repairing the pipes. The good news is that I do have a good set of them available from the donor parts car. I also have an air chisel that can cut through the housing or welds as needed. Any one out there have any experience in doing this kind of surgery? I would love to hear any suggestions on the best approach to getting this accomplished. Many thanks

You can do it however you please, but I have heard it is best to just cut it straight along the bottom center, front to back, and peel either side away, opening it like a long clamshell, if you will. Then you remove the pipes, and just about any exhaust shop could bend & fab replacements. When the new ones go in, you bend the shielding back over them & weld it shut again. That's basically it.
PS, I have heard of some folks just removing the shielding altogether, while others weld it back. I don't know whether it is structurally required, I think it is there mainly to prevent road debris from flying up and hitting the pipes directly. In any case, whether you reattach the thing is up to you. -Mac.

This car has,in addition to the speedo cable, an A/C line attached to the driver's side of the shielding "tunnel". I do plan to split the shielding as you have described, but in considering the stuff that is attached to the driver's side of the shielding, I thought would split it along the passenger side corner, rather than down the middle. This may make it easier to weld back together along the corner and minimize disturbing or melting the speedo cable and A/C line. I also plan to use the piping from the donor car, assuming there is no rust or damage. I do know the cooling system was sound with no leaks on the donor car. I wonder if the cooling pipes are welded as well into the body, or just sitting there.

The first one I cut down the middle but welding it back up from underneath was a rotten jog unless you like to get burned. The second time I got some radiator hose and simple attached two lengths down each side of the tunnel. The hose fits up tight to the bottom of the car and is tucked in alongside the tunnel so it is quite well protected. Works fine and took less than an hour to do.
