I never notice when it starts... nothing changes, no lights go on or anything, but as soon as I step on the brake the radio dies (wierd huh?). DOes that sound like a voltage regulator as well? I've never heard of such an odd problem before.

Around $60 for a 60 amp unit from JC Whitney, compared to $200+ for a replacement from Bayless. I did have to weld up a bracket for the upper mount, but it was pretty straight forward. I used an AC compressor block mount from a junkyard X-1/9 for the bottom mount / pivot point. It worked great and my red light never came on again! A couple words of caution however..... safety wire! Vibration will loosen these bolts over time. Yup, I found out the hard way.<!-- google_ad_section_end -->

[FONT=Trebuchet MS, Verdana, Tahoma, Arial]<!-- google_ad_section_start -->I have used VW rabbit alternators with built in regulators in several cars, including 2 X's. They used to be all over the junk yards. Just have to make mounting brackets and you can put anything in there.

I also used a very small, high output unit from a Honda once. That was in an Austin America. I had to make a new pulley as well as the mounting brackets though. The newer Hondas use flat belts.

When you do make new mounting brackets for whatever you put in the car, try to increase the adjustment travel from stock. It will make changing belts much easier.<!-- google_ad_section_end -->

When I pulled my a/c compressor, I fabricated a linkage for the alt that gives it about 6 inches of swing now... makes it WAY easier to work with.
