Am I mad to want a 8.32 motor in my X1/9?

True Classic
I have a twin cam Thema motor that I plan to put into my X1/9... and have had a quick look at the Thema 8.32 engine bay compared to the twin cam 2.0 bay, and can't see why I can't eventually put the Ferrari 3L V8 in.. I'm starting to think this would be an ultimate conversion.
I am mad :eyepop:

Yes.. But I support you.....:eyepop::wink2:
Doo eet!

given that it is a 90deg egine, the banks are spaced WIDE apart. The overall length may be aissue as well.

I have a lot of phots and measurements around somewhere when I was about to put one in my Scorpion. It was a tight fit in a Scorp, I would think it would be too large for an X.

BTW, if you do go for one, find a series2 engine. The intake plenum is much narower than the series1. I also have a factory engine manual that I could be persueded to part with - not cheap, but very nice info & pictures.

this video shows the engine out of the car, and looking at the size of it all, it does look BIG, but the 2.0 pretty much fills a thema engine bay, and I know that will fit in the X
I'll keep dreaming, for now I'll put the 2.0 in :)

Is this engine based on the Alfa v6?

Or am I thinking of another engine?

If it's the one that's based on the Alfa, a local guy here in the DFW area has a project going to get one planted in his Scorpion. It's just barely up and running (nowhere near street legal), and I got a ride in it last weekend. SCARY fast.

no not the alfa's V6 its the same motor as the Ferrari 308/328 < forget if its the 308 or 328 I wanna say 328

Yep, 328

3.2 litre, quad-cam.

Having just changed the V6 engine in an Alfa 164 (same sized engine bay as the Lancia Thema - the 164, the Thema, the Fiat Croma and the Saab 9000 were all built on a shared platform), I can tell you I would not like to try to fit that engine in an X1/9 and surely the Ferrari V8 would be bigger again.

The 8.32 engine is actually a 3.0 litre (2927cc capacity) quattrolvalvole... I own one, recently had it apart for its Ferrrai "major service" and I have every piece of information ever printed about it.

Owning both a Lanica Thema 8.32 and an X, I would think it an absurd waste of time and effort and huge expense to do this conversion. If you want a Ferrari 308 then buy one.

Putting a 308 engine into an X (if it is technically possible to do) is just a way of creating the most expensive to maintain X on the planet...the roar of the engine would be terrifying :) acceleration intoxicating:) and smiles would be permanently cast into the driver's face:) DO IT!

Doing the conversion would be an interesting and I know a fellow here in Canada that has a Thema 8.32 engine with the idea of placing it in a Lancia Scorpion....but the project to date has not happened...the electrics for that engine are mind boggling and the fuel injection is a rare version only found on Ferrari mondials produced for the Swiss market...hard to find parts for sure and harder to find a CIS guy that can handle it.

I love the 8.32..it is the most sublime driving sedan ever built bar none, the best sound, gobs of torque at high speed, excellent road holding despite a luxury ride and it took sourcing parts from the following countries to do the 'Major service" ....Italy, Germany, South Africa, England, USA, Canada, Spain....ony in the age of the internet would anyone be foolish enough to own one of these cars...But I am one of possibly three such fools now in North America to have the honour to have a 8.32 in the garage.

Here I am playing on a private highway.

Regarding the Scorpion, If memory serves, there's a guy in the Northern Calif area with just such a conversion. I saw it at the Mirafiori Oregon gathering in 2004, maybe 2005. I think he had to modify the firewall to fit. An impressive machine though.

"Private Highway"...

Well Paul, if you can afford your own "Private Highway", then you probably can afford most anything, including this kinda swap!

HA!

Enjoyed the videos! Thanks!

Tony,

I own a road construction company, so I often have both closed private, and closed public highways that need high speed vehicle assessment:)

Being the broke contractor that I am, I am more likely to put a diesel into my X (A big honking Cat out of one of my spare dump trucks)..now that would be fun!:eyepop:

I am still having a bit of a time trying to imagine the sound of the 8.32 in an X...listen to this clip and imagine an X sounding the same....mean and nasty for sure.:confuse2:

The Thema-powered Scorpion is Ken Haven's...

He's the current President of FIAT America and lives in Livermore, CA. I'm sure he didn't have to modify the firewall.

Regards,

HAHAHA... yur rite on...

Especially in these two clips...

The car APPEARS to be a docile Camry or Accord and the sound is ferrocious! Almost like it was edited in... HA!

You have of course, viewed the "Rendevous" clip made in France on YouTube right? Kinda like that!

Thanls for sharing...

Ya, I have watched that Rendevous vid too many times although i still prefer the following Ferrari/Shell commercial

Here is a clip of the 2009 Fiats Up North (F.U.N.) run in Wisconsin that was the deciding factor for my wife to suggest I buy an X (there was a gorgeous bright green one there). We were driving the Thema 8.32 which seemed like a tank compared to the Fiats...three days after we returned, we had our X purchased and home in the garage. Lookin forward to 2010 FUN in our X.

Paul... both are great clips...

The Ferrari/Shell one is fantastic... I love the idea of race cars on the street... behaving themselves, but still being themselves!

You obviously have a fine woman there if she can see the virtues of the X1/9. Mine thought it was "cute" back in '83 when two of her girlfriends owned one... so I bought her one. Lots of stories and miles inbetween... and now he's essentially mine.

As for the beauty and the beast syndrome... I too own another, a beast also, in the form of a '69 Vette. Sometimes its just FUN to throttle a responsive V8!

Thanks for sharing...
