After I sell them, I'll need a new toy. (I'll put the Spider up on here when it is done, don't ask me about it now).
Obviously, I'm considering an X. I've owned 2 1/2 (currently own a half of one, but hopefully won't in a month), and enjoyed them all. All of mine had annoying little problems (rust holes in floor, hydraulics/brakes, and electrical), however. Also, at 6 feet, I'd get cramped up on the freeway after a while, and the noise got to me also. So I'm thinking of substitutes also.
The only thing close seems to be the Toyota MR2. Seems to be flawlessly reliable, and I kinda like the looks of the later model (91-95), although it is very very boring.
What I'm mainly wondering is whether or not the car is fun. I remember winding the X's up to 7,000, and tossing them around corners on their little 145's. Anyone owned both? Driven both at high speed? I realize I'm talking to a biased crowd, of course.
Also, are the T-Tops a pain in the butt to operate? I LOVED the targa top on the X because it wasn't that windy on the freeway with it off, and it conveniently stowed in the front, after simple removal. Anyone know about those?
Odd Tidbit-on one website there's mention of a Lotus project that almost exactly resembles the MR2, and the have an article explaining shady dealings between Toyota and Lotus....

My father owns one and I've had a chance to wring it out on back roads near his home. Styling is not as good as the second gen, but is still very pleasing to the (my) eye. On my dad's car, he just installed tokico illuminas and lowering springs and I haven't had a chance to drive it in that configuration yet. I did drive it right after the 15inch wheels and 195/50vr/15 AVSI's went on. Really nice. I could break the car loose on the stock steel rims with 185 Potenzas, but not on the new wheel setup. I would have had to been going insanely fast to get into trouble. I imagine with the new suspension bits, it's even better. The engine is very very good too. Very smooth and easy to over-rev if you're not careful. Much like his 246 GTS Dino, but it revs higher! Oh, and the tach reads to 9000 which give it bonus points. Engine sound above five grand is AWESOME even with stock intake and exhaust. It has a lot of that "go-cart" feeling that the exxie has. Stock brakes are very good, although I belive my dad is going to drilled rotors and performance pads. Steering is very quick like the exxie, but has less feel. Not as bad as some Hondas though. Basically it is very similar to a grown-up x19. Would I buy one? Maybe... at some point down the line. Right now I wouldn't trade my x19 for one though. even if it is faster! Oh, and the interior is sort of a mixed bag. The stock steering wheel would be the first thing to replace as it is too big, thin and extends too far out. The shift lever is perfectly positioned and the box is very slick, but gets quite notchy with age. I know you want the second gen, but for half the money you can get a very nice low mileage first gen, and although I haven't driven the second gen I hear it loses much of the small car go cart feel. The ultimate would be the supercharged first gen. 0-60 times are in the seven second range (8 for normaly aspirated). They cost about Five grand as opposed to three and a half for a good NA. Also they are very plentiful (three for sale in my local Auto Shopper)so look for a good one with service records and no damage. Just like the x, these cars have been driven hard and put away wet, so it's worth spending time finding the right car. Hope this Helps!! <!-- google_ad_section_end -->

I still can't tear my eyes off the design of an X... and although thoroughly biased with one of the next two statements being PURELY personal preference... I say it anyway;

There are no finer QUALITY automobiles made in the world today than those designed by the Japanese marks. That would include Honda, Acura, Toyota, Nissan, Mitzsubishi, Lexus, etc.

There are no finer AESTHETICALLY PLEASING and SEXIER designed automobiles in the world, today, or yesterday, and most likely will never be any other, then the cars designed under the Bertone and PininFarina marks. That would include Ferrari, Alpha, Lambos, Fiat 124's, X1/9's and Lancia's.

I've never been more comfortable in my Accord, never had so much fun as in my X1/9.

Even though the MR2's came close, as did the Fieros, they only came close in where they placed their engines. I don't ever expect a Japanese or American company to ever really build a "sports car"... and I don't ever expect Italy to come out with a luxury sedan that's quiet and dependable.

I am just shy of 6'4" and I have taken many trips in it from Seattle to Montana and other "interesting" areas.

As for the MR2, I agree with the other guys on the first generation cars, but also I wouldn't be so quick to overlook the later ones. One of the car rags, either sport car magazine or turbo magazine did a 8+ month long write up on the later style car. They decided to see how much power they could get out of the car without having to take off the head and work on any interior pieces. They were able to get a dependable 350hp out of it. They finally blew it up on the dyno at 500hp, and that was because they accidentally ran it too lean. I have driven the turbo MR2 and found that it is either on or off, but I am sure that it takes time to get use to it's driving style. As for room, I found it to be about the same as the early style X.

Finally, what about the Fiero, later style of course, or the TR7 or TR8? There is a Lamborgini(sp?) Jalpa up here for 30k also. That is the ultimate grown up X.

The major difference being the 8 has a 3.5 ltr Rover V8. The build quality of the early cars that were built at Speke were terrible, the labor problems were so bad they shut the plant down and moved production to Canley. The build quality of these cars is much better. In late 1980 production shifted to the Rover plant at Solihull (which still builds Land Rovers) and the 81 model is considered the best quality of the lot. Of course I own a 81!

The TR8 is much different beast then TR7, the Rover V8 cured most of the problems with car. One major problem with the TR7 was the heads would warp. It's actually the same 2.0 ltr engine that was used in the Saab 99. Saab made it under license from Triumph.
Like most older cars if you take care of it the car will take car of you. The styling of the Wedge is very similar to the X. I think that's one reason why I liked car. I remember reading an assessment of the TR7 by a MGB owner (most hate Triumph), it wasn't a very complimentary review, but he did compare the TR7 to the X saying it was the "other" wedge shaped car built in the 70's. He thought the X was even worse. My guess is he never set foot in either car. It also depends on the car you are exposed to. If my only experience with a X or TR7 were mistreated examples (as many are) I would think they were all crap.

I just read an old british comparison article of the X and the '85 MR-2. That article really makes you want to buy a Mr.2.

I think an MR-2 might be the right car for you.

Yeah, I had one off the very first MR2s in Washington. I LOVED the car..... in fact I bought my first X so I wouldn't put so many miles on it (30k in the first year)! If you ever see a blue '85 MR2 with no wings, sunroof, etc that has a strange 'MR2' logo (black that reflects white at night), it would be my old one!

DON'T BUY ONE, or you will never want to drive your X again! They are WAY more comfortable and require no work!(BTW, I have a set of beige/black early MR2 seats that I won't be using if anyone close wants some)

The only real problem I had was the dreaded 'drop-throttle-oversteer' that could make a fast drive REAL interesting. <!-- google_ad_section_end -->

Do you have any fotos... what would you want for them... are they in good shape or need recovering?

Do they have all the hardware (tracks) to install.

I would think they'd go in an X without too much trouble.

That's what I was asking for... Is an MR2 more or less fun than an X... Trying to decide if the lower costs and fun factor of an X outweigh the better comfort, reliability, and ease of finding parts.

I'm sure the car is GREAT, but it's barely in the same catagory. If you have the money and want a fast, reliable, fun, and fast sports car that you can drive every day with no hassle, buy the mr2. It's just a different car. When you get down to first gen over exxie, it gets a little more complicated but is still on the basic premise. MR2= more reliable, easy to live with, comforitable, faster, easier to modify. I can't really say there's any shame in picking it over the x19. Some people just have different tastes. As I said before, I'm sticking with the exxie for the forseeable future however... if I had both cars, guess what would be in the garage the majority of the time? (the x...) why? it's just easier to choose the mr2. The reason I'm sticking with the x? I'm going for a stripped down dual purpose machine based on the abarth prototipo, but sticking with the 1300 engine. I'm only 20... gotta get it out of my system!!<!-- google_ad_section_end -->
