Gearing

Eric,

If you watch the video you can clearly see he never gets into the power band in 2nd gear. So more shifting isn't an issue. A shorter final drive will get the car into the power band in 2nd without having to shift to 3rd.

And shifting isn't necessarily bad. I geared my DSP X1/9 for 2nd gear corners and 3rd gear straights. It worked very well.

Steve, are you just talking about 2.5" springs plus sleeves here or what?

Jim,

Springs are cheap and easy. You can buy a set of coilovers for about $250.

I assume this is springs plus coilover sleeves to convert a standard disposable strut to a coilover by cutting down the big spring perch? If not then I'd be interested to hear more about this cheap route...

Thanks,
Pete

for the videos. As someone who hasn't autocrossed for 30(!!) years, it's really good to see shots from the driver's point of view.

Also, the thread about the mods is great. I'm in the process of repairing a blown engine in a GP car that's had all the suspension mods, running the exact tires you are, with a stock engine, lightened flywheel and Weber 34 DAT. I just bought Chris's head with a 35-75 cam, and am wondering if I should fork over the funds for his 36 DNF (I'm on a budget).

aside from tires, i think a good driver will make more of a difference, than other mods, although having a decent running car with good shocks/springs, and tires helps quite a bit, but you dont want to pick up bad habits like i did when i had blown shocks id jab the brakes and get on the gas right away causing it to oversteer everywhere

Thanks, Steve

for the referrals. I lived in Richmond, VA 35 years ago & went through Harpers Ferry quite a bit on my travels. I found out today the local Junior College runs autocross, and I'll check out those clubs you mentioned. I'm really stoked about having some fun in the X!

Steve: a Q about springs

Springs are cheap and easy. You can buy a set of coilovers for about $250. Or you can do what I did and buy a pair of Ford Granada front springs and cut them to make a set of 4. These work remarkably well and I was able to buy Granada springs for $20 at a junk yard. These days Granadas are pretty much gone from junk yards but you may be able to buy springs from JC Whitney or find something similar in a junk yard that works as well.

Regarding going the Granada route, what struts were you using? I've done some casual looking around and such springs are still available and pretty cheap. I'm considering it for the off season, but won't have the funds to replace the struts as well. If the springs will out perform the dampers, I'm wondering if it would make more sense to just stay with the cut rears all around for now. As always, I appreciate your thoughts!

Oh - any more thoughts about Hershey this weekend? Forecast surprisingly says highs in the upper 60's, but a chance of rain Sunday. Probably too early to tell for sure though.

Granada Springs and Struts

I was using Konis with the Granada springs. They worked fine but are basically non-existent these days.

KYBs should work adequately. I would at least give it a try. The cost is nominal so if the struts are overwhelmed you haven't lost much.
