What were the circumstances under which you first noticed this had happened? Were you driving & when you stopped, you saw oil? Did you do any hard driving beforehand? Or were you getting ready to take it apart & noticed it was already loose?

I was going to tak it apart anyway when I noticed there was a puddle of oil under the car, so I droped the engine,(which I am suping up, big valve head, header, sidedraft carbs, all the goodies)anyway, I have not taken the tranny apart, so I don't know the real problem, but I believe it is the clip you are talking about. [FONT=Trebuchet MS, Verdana, Tahoma, Arial]<!-- google_ad_section_start -->Usually when these pop out, it is because the snap ring that retains it is weak. If the stub shaft has been out before it weakend the shaft. It is rare that they come out, but it can probably just be knocked back in and it will be fine.

Use a large mallet, or a hammer and a block of wood to drive the stub shaft back home. Then try to pull it back out. If it comes back out, remove it and see if the snap ring is still in place. If not, you will need a new snap ring. You will also want to find the old one which is probably now stuck to the magnet in the drain plug.
