Although I do not plan to autocross it more than maybe the occasional fun run, I would like to buy a battery that won't puke acid out all over the front trunk when I corner hard...

I was thinking about perhaps going for an Optima battery, but they are damn expensive! Besides, I am not sure if an Optima is a suitable replacement for the standard lead/acid battery, in the respect of daily use? Anybody know about these or have a suggestion on a good sealed battery that will still perform on a "daily driver" basis? -Mac.

yes, an Optima is a great replacement, but it is really expensive. Cornering shouldn't be a problem for any battery AFAIK. Boil over usually happens when the battery is overcharged by an enthusiastic voltage regulator.

Another thing you may look into is a battery designed to sit in the interior of the car. VW Bug, Audi 5000000000, and others have the battery under the rear seat and I have been told that they are semi sealed, with a rubber hose that vents fumes and acid away from the battery out the tube (like a motorcycle battery).
You could run the tube to the outside of the car and hopefully avoid acid corrosion.

Personally, I think a battery from K-Mart is fine, but think about using a plastic battery tray under it. And neutralize old acid with baking soda. Eastwood sells acid proof paint if you need it.

I am pretty sure it is not overcharging (when was the last time you heard of an X1/9 that did that??) - anyhow, it is never a large amount of acid, just a few droplets spit out, but I don't like it. I have to pull the battery & clean the area every time I see that it has happened.

Thus, I am still toying with the idea of a sealed battery, but the average "maintenance free" lead/acid batteries that I have seen just do not impress me. The Optima appears to be the Holy Grail of batteries around here, but I just can't bring myself to spend more on a battery than I paid for the entire car!

In the UK, your battery is in a mirror-image location to ours. If I recall correctly though, your cars still do use the black plastic battery shielding lid, correct? This is a big piece of plastic that slips over the battery, and secures to the car with one 10mm nut on each side.

If I am right, there should be a little 10mm stud bolt sticking up on either side of your battery recess. Those are the attachment points for the stock battery cover I mentioned. If you have that piece installed, you probably won't need any other means of securing the battery.

In my case, though, I did not have the cover - it was missing when I bought the car. I could probably find a replacement, but I like to have the terminals easily accessible (never know when someone might need a jump-start!) so I simply fashioned a battery hold-down myself. It is a simple piece of flat metal, long enough to reach across the top-front edge of the battery, then bent to wrap around each side to bolt onto the existing stud bolts there. It works quite well, although it is not as cosmetically pretty as the stock battery cover probably would be.

Anyway, it suits me just fine & it works

If I recall, when I got my '75 it did have the black cover but inside that there was a second hold-down - a flat rod connected to a J-shaped rod on each side. These Js hooked into small holes on the inside walls of the battery recess, and the center rod went across the battery top from side to side.

I cannot say wether it actually came that way from the factory, but I am suspecting it did not. At any rate, I removed the J-shaped rod affair and just used the black cover, it has been all I ever needed in the car to keep the battery in place, but then again - the more secure the better, right?

So I guess one could do it however one feels best. My opinion is: as long as it doesn't move, it's a good method!

My '78 has a small piece of mettal that looks factory, that goes on the bottom front of the battery. It is held on by one bolt and is shaped in a way that it slips over the front bottom lip of the battery.....clamping it down.

It seems to work just fine to me. This could be what you got through the mail.
