Right ? All the texts caution against using one that will fit....or appears to fit. They point out that the desired size (length) is one size shorter.
i.e. The belt has to be "motored on" with the starter motor as some have suggested. Sounds dangerous.
I completely took the waterpump off its mount to fit mine. It would not stretch on the pulleys even with the adjuster leg fully at its endstop.
Thoughts ?

I never motor or starter motor my belts on as it generally overstresses the belt an shortens its life. I have also RUINED a brand-new belt or two doing it that way.
I have put my car in 4th gear and rocked it to "cock-on" a belt and it sometimes accomplishes the same thing as "motoring" one on!
I took BACK the two CORRECT belts (Alternator-WP-Crank and Smog Pump-WP-Crank)and opted for two belts about an inch longer in circumferance... so I could slip them on and then tention the Alternator and the Smog Pump to the proper tension...
I don't know... Have done this for years on many other cars... and I've never thrown a belt on the FIAT or any of the others.
Seems to me there are a few improvements that can be made with some COMMON SENSE... We get baffled by theinking the factory "knows best"! Not necessarily... in my book.
(Late model Bertone 3rd Brake Lights come to mind... Did any of the *&$^%$# engineers ever sit in the car and SEE if they could SEE out the rearview mirror anymore????)

Les is correct, you have to roll on the correct size belt. It won't slip on. Three options here. Always put the belt on the alternator and water pump pulleys fully, and start it on the top and forward sections of the crank pulley. Then either 1. use the starter, 2. use a 38mm socket on the crank nut, or 3. Turn the drivers side brake rotor with the car in 4th gear. The last option works well, but whatever you do, make sure the car is supported well and not going to drop on you!! Also only use fingers to help guide the belt if you are NOT using the starter method. Good luck,

Les is correct, you have to roll on the correct size belt. It won't slip on. Three options here. Always put the belt on the alternator and water pump pulleys fully, and start it on the top and forward sections of the crank pulley. Then either 1. use the starter, 2. use a 38mm socket on the crank nut, or 3. Turn the drivers side brake rotor with the car in 4th gear. The last option works well, but whatever you do, make sure the car is supported well and not going to drop on you!! Also only use fingers to help guide the belt if you are NOT using the starter method. Good luck,

There was no way that sucker was coming off without cutting it off (which I did) It was shot anyway. I went two sizes larger and made a new tension bracket. Fiat Engineers! Notes:
* = I have no idea what the difference is here between the Alt W/O AC and the WP???
= Two sets of Dayco numbers... I would say one was longer than the other, and another was shorter??? Also, I understand Goodyear and Dayco are the same and use same numbers.
*** = Beck is Beck Arnley (B/A) and the ~ means that the first part of the # is the same as the WP number, only the last 3 digits change.
Lastly, the 7270 for the Smog pump I substituted with a 7290 in order to mount it NORMALLY!
