Or should I stick with the "throw a $25 carb rebuild kit on it and it's good?" I'd rather have FI to be honest (newer, less rust). I saw an '86 at an autocross today and it rocked! It came within 1 second of a nationally ranked guy driving a 350hp Camaro. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

The FI system is fairly simple once you learn about it and very robust. It is also quite self-contained in the X1/9.
The old myth that FI cars can't be hopped up is being proven wrong these days as well.

I will add my voice to the FI band wagon. I have had them all; small carbs, big carbs, stock FI, aftermarket FI. The Bosch system works pretty good as is. Start there.
Was the autocrosser you saw in Dallas Black and Gray? If so that was Corey Pettit's car. It does have a stock Bosch L-Jetronic system on it. That is a quick car.

I guess the stock FI is OK with a mild aftermarket cam, namely the European original stock cam. No rush, though, as I won't buy one until late summer. That reminds me, how are the a/c systems in these cars? Do they work good? Easy to get parts for? Should I not bother? I will add my voice to the FI band wagon. I have had them all; small carbs, big carbs, stock FI, aftermarket FI. The Bosch system works pretty good as is. Start there.
Was the autocrosser you saw in Dallas Black and Gray? If so that was Corey Pettit's car. It does have a stock Bosch L-Jetronic system on it. That is a quick car.

Yes that was Corey's car. He has another one he drives on the street. He came within 1 second of Mark Madarash, if you know him. I guess the stock FI is OK with a mild aftermarket cam, namely the European original stock cam.
