What do the casting numbers on the block mean? Mine reads 138.2 FIAT then below that it reads 17. Surely this doesn't entale that I have the 17th 1500 engine FIAT ever produced, does it?
I worked for a year in a foundry Installing a 30 ton ( melt ) arc furnace. When a part is cast in sand it requires a pattern and cores to be made. Each pattern will have a number. The pattern is placed in a form and the sand is packed around it and the form is split ( Cope and Drag ) and the pattern removed and is reused. In large foundries making thousands of the same casting more than 1 pattern is required, each will be numbered incase after the heat ( molten metal ) is poured a problem is identified and can be traced back to what pattern was used for Quality control.
