I check mine every year and if it looks good, I let it go. In a road car, I would expect that if the transmission is healthy, it could go for several years.
Heat and contamination is what kills the oil. Road cars don't generate a lot of transmission temperature in normal circumstances. For racing cars or regular track use, changing it periodically is a good idea.
