I've rebuilt the master and the slave cylinders, put it all back in, and still I pump the clutch pedal and nothing happens at the slave. I vacuum bled the system, no bubbles. I did not bench bleed the master though, dummy me. I read about putting air pressure on the system, but don't understand how to do that. Anyone want to go through this again? Or have any other ideas?<!-- google_ad_section_end -->

With a full resivoir, remove supply hose. You should have a slow but steady stream of fluid. If not, there has to be a restriction in the line or contamination in the bottom of resevoir. If all ok, you'll need two people to proceed. Pump clutch pedal a few times with steel line disconnected. If pressure is good from master cylinder, reinstall steel line. If there is very weak or no pressure, replace compete master with a new one(about $35 from Fiat parts specialist like C. Obert). You should be able to blow your finger off the fluid outlet just by pumping the pedal.
If the master is good, just pump several times with your hand before your assistant opens the bleeder screw on the slave. Remember to open and reclose screw only with the pedal to the floor. You may have to do this 20 or more times to get the air out as it's a long way back there. When there finally is some resistance as you push the pedal, you've gotten most of the air out. Don't stop until there is a steady flow of fluid. You could easily use up a qt. of fluid doing this. Dont reuse fluid! If this still doesn't work you can resort to air pressure assistance. Remove the resevoir cap and stuff a rag around the opening. Use a blow gun to pressurize system lightly. Make sure fluid level stays above 1/2 full. Bleed as listed above. There are lots of variations on this but it is most important to be carefull and keep pressure low and fluid full, so as not to introduce additional air into the system. If you can't get fluid to come out the slave, slacken off the slave rod nut some so that the piston is not forced all the way in (Lalo's tip).
I have not had good luck with vacuum bleeding the clutch BTW.

You don't need to bench bleed but it would be a good idea to have the line from the reservoir full of fluid when you connect the line to the master. I did not do this.

I have a reservoir cap with a car tire valve stem installed. I connected my 12V tire compressor to this. With the slave bleeder open and a can under it, fluid shot out of the bleeder and I was almost done. The compressor is overkill, it pumps the reservoir empty too fast. I'd use a manual pump next time.
After this you can pump the pedal to bleed.

Also, I just installed speedbleeders. They rock!!
I can only recommend them.

Oh, if none of this works, you should ask yourself if you assembled the master correctly...

All I can think to add is that the #1 most important thing is to remain as relaxed as you can & do not lose your patience. It can be a terribly long & exhausting process until you've done it a couple times (even then it can be tough, you are just more aware of what's going on) - stay cool and collected, this will definitely help the job to go more smoothly!

I have to side with the idea that just buying a new cylinder unit is more practical than rebuilding a used one. There seem basically to be 2 camps of Xheads on this - one group who like to rebuild, the other who can't bring themselves to bother with it when a new unit is available so cheaply. I am in the 2nd group, but it's just a matter of opinion I suppose...

I want to make a resivoir cap like Ulix's, a bicycle hand-pump would be great for applying pressure to the system! I have often told people to try using a vacuum assist tool (vaccusuck or supersucker or whatever they call it at your auto parts store) but as time goes on I am hearing mixed reviews on their effectiveness. All I know is that one can use all the "assist" one can get!

You have a separate reservoir for the new fluid, this is pressurised from your road wheel. The reservoir is then linked to your filler reservoir via a pipe and a cap with a tube through it. Once connected up all you do is undo the bleed nipple and wait for the new fluid to appear.
It works well for both the brakes and clutch.<!-- google_ad_section_end -->

It did take a long time and a lot of pumping, but finally I had nothing but fluid coming up the tube from the slave nipple. I don't claim to be a mechanic, but for the life of me, I don't know how anyone could put the master back together wrong. I guess there is always a first for everything, so I will take it back off and get a new master and slave.
I did want to take time to genuinely thank you guys for being here. Steve's transmission course saved me a lot of frustration and headaches,,,and a transmission(I would have put the 1st fork grove upside down as per the Haynes manual). Again thank you.<!-- google_ad_section_end -->

It comes with diferent size caps (metric) for different reservoirs.

This thing has a hose that attaches to the spare tire to pressurize the reservoir and bleeding is supposed to be very easy (that's what they all say)

Don't be too hard on youself, next time I am sure you will look much closer at the particular system when something is not working properly.

But actually my note is not to make you feel better, but to mention that you should look VERY CLOSE at your master cylinders assembly package.

I had to do that nasty job three times (well I got my first 'X back in 1983 or '82?) and have to replace the clutch master before anything.

I am not an expert by any means, but I am pretty sure that if the rod was out of the clutch master cylinder something for sure is not right, because it's not enough play in the rod to allow it to get out of the hole by itself!

Check all the pedal bushing that may have allowed the extra play required for the rod got out of the hole? Something there it's just not right!

If you are going to replace the clutch master cylinder I strongly recomend you to replace the brake's master as well.
