You surely aren't talking about the engine oil filler cap are you? That is right on top of the engine, can't miss it.
Or do you mean the engine drain plug or the transmission fill plug?

You'll have to get the car up in the air and lay on your back. It is on the side of the transmission case. You should see a drain plug and a fill plug higher up (left side of the car).

Do you have a Haynes manual? That's the first thing to buy.

I have got the Autobooks owner woekshop manual (OWN 928), and the filler plug is just mentioned in text, no drawing to actually se the location (true).

I know that the Haynes are normally good manuals. Maybe it would be a good idea to get that one, while it actually can be of "higher" class?<!-- google_ad_section_end -->

[FONT=Trebuchet MS, Verdana, Tahoma, Arial]<!-- google_ad_section_start -->For myself, I have gathered as wide a variety of X1/9 shop books as I can get: 2 different Clymer manuals, US-spec & UK-spec Haynes manuals (did you know the UK version is hardcover & goes all the way to 1988 models!?), the FAZA book & a few other of that sort of "tweak" books - more for entertainment value than actual usability. I also have a couple of lesser-known publishers' shop books, plus (as if that all weren't enough) the Fiat factory 1300 manual, and the IAI Bertone 1500 factory manual...

This is just my opinion, but I would recommend that any one of you should be gathering up as many different shop books as you can get. There is not a single one of them (not even the factory books) that is not subject to errors, missing information and/or the lack of just the one illustration you need the most.

It is very useful to have multiple manuals to use. If one lacks info or says something that just doesn't seem right, you can easily pick up one or two of the others to check if they agree. That step alone is quite valuable. Also it is nice because if you are reading the Haynes & you just don't follow what they are trying to say, or their diagram is not clear etc., just pick up one of the other books & see if there is better info available there...

I would recommend the Haynes manual first, but not because it is that great - rather, because it is the easiest/cheapest one to find. It is true that one can survive on the Haynes alone, but I would not suggest it, as that one is often confusing or not descriptive enough. By the way, if you're driving a US-spec X, don't buy the UK-spec Haynes manual. The cars are quite different (I only have the UK version for entertainment/reference)...

I would say at the very least that no one should have less than 2 different shop manuals, 3 is even better. -Mac.

The pictures are all of a euro car and I can't remember if it deals with the emission controls such as air pump etc. or not.
