Im changing to an electric water pump and want to make sure I understand the routing (to, from radiator,,,to from heater core). Are the heater core hoses necessary; could they be eliminated? (yes I pulled the heater out). Got any idea of gpm from the water pump? I dont want to get a pump that is too powerful. And lastly, when changing a head gasket, we have to cover a small hole in the head behind the water manifold,,,what is that hole for? And why dont the gaskets we buy cover it? I would like also to hear anything else about the system. Thank YOU.<!-- google_ad_section_end -->

[FONT=Trebuchet MS, Verdana, Tahoma, Arial]<!-- google_ad_section_start -->The cooling system is pretty basic and essentially much the same as any other 70s/80s car. The water pump supplies water directly to the auto-choke and cabin heater (if you want to be rid of the cabin heater than just blank the pipes off, don't loop a pipe around as a bypass though - think about it, this is the same as turning the heater valve off....). The supply to and from the radiator is via the thermostat housing, which bypasses the radiator completely while the engine coolant is below operating temperature.

I don't know any details about blanking a passageway off on the head - I've certainly never had to do it so I've no idea what it is for.

With regards to electronic water pumps, there is an Australian company called "Davies Craig" that produce a general purpose water pump (inspirationally named the "electronic water pump" or EWP for short) for cars designed as a replacement for mechanical systems. For ordinary road use the kit would cost about $300 (at a guess) which includes a "smart controller" which monitors and controls the water temperature rather like the controller on a climate control system.

I've heard no bad press on these items and I'm looking for one to replace the pump on my race car but so far I haven't actually got my hands on the real thing....

[FONT=Trebuchet MS, Verdana, Tahoma, Arial]<!-- google_ad_section_start -->With regard to the "hole", I believe it is only part of the later models, maybe 1979 and later. As I recall it is associated with the emission controls. The hole connects the tops of the exhaust valves, and is not plugged at the end of the head after the drilling operation. There are usually 2 gaskets in the gasket sets, one that will have material over the hole. Good luck.<!-- google_ad_section_end -->
