Custom Airfilter Housings and 4 new headlights on my 128.

Last saturday I went to the plastic store and gave them some dimentions for these boxes. They cut me some pieces and i glued them together and screwed them down. My old air filters were falling apart. I found black foam inside the float bowls. They use a common airfilter from Napa or O'reilly's a wix or microguard. I also found a K&N that fits.

I took a piece of square steel tubing and fastened it behind the bumper blocks with alot of painstaking sawing with a dull hacksaw blade. I then drilled some holes and got some U bolts from Ace. I somehow fastened them to the metal tubing. I used 4 old Carrello headlights that were laying around my shop.
I instaled some relays and am just about done wiring them in.
Just thought I would post a few pictures.

Interesting motor...

Adjustable cam pulley, dual DCNFs, X1/9 cam cover,
dual outlet exhaust manifold, Bosch ignition.
Looks like a nice find!

Thx for showing your projects.

The highschooler in me that used to scorch around in a 1976 128 just passed out.

The four lights look absolutely awesome in a rally bashing way! I can't tell you how many times I looked at putting a pair (or more) on the front bumper of that old 128.

Ummm...

Oooohhhh...:doh:I get a queasy feeling that the first hard bump/pothole you hit will have these nice Carello lights either:

  1. Fall forward/down & either shatter on the ground or swing from the wiring & hit the bottom of the bar (or the car body) & shatter.
  2. Try to snap forward due to their own weight (under compression) & crack around the rear perimeter where the U-bolt is holding them (with the front half of the light falling to the ground).
  3. Rotate down & hit against the front of the metal bar (& crack/break).
Each light really needs better support, & in the correct area of the lamp (specifically, around the large front perimeter/seam). The back end of the light is not designed to handle the weight/stress of the entire unit like that.

Is that an Alquati 128 alloy sump? Or a stock X1/9 unit?

thanks for all the replies.
the engine is a 1500 also, i forgot to mention that.
yes the lights not very well attached, I would like to find some 5" buckets that I could put them in. Any recommendations?

I really don't know about the sump, I could take some more detailed pictures or take a closer look if you would want.
It also has a 5 speed trans.

LOVE the air cleaner boxes!!!

That is a GREAT idea!! Just have to fab a way to keep the filters in place, but your definitely onto something there! Keep us posted. Nice work.

I was thinking some sort of clips like on other aircleaner boxes but directly on the air filter.
It cost me 35 bucks for the boxes and about 12 for the filters.

Something like a shoe box lid

Maybe something like a shoe box lid with the center cut out but made from the same material as the bottom. A couple of latching clips could easily be attached to that and would seal over the top edge of the filter.
