After recovering the engine from the car in a very low-tech ‘workshop' environment on my own, cleaning the engine (chemicals and pressure-cleaners are wonderful) and myself afterwards I took it apart. I started measuring the cylinder bores and obtained the following results.

The cylinders have a maximum difference in measurement (Haynes calls it ovality) of 1.5 / 1.2 / 1.5 / 3.1 mm. This means a rebore...........

My actual cylinder-sizes are (taken into account that this measurement is done under non-optimal conditions and tools accurate to 1/100 of a mm):
Cyl 1: 86.020 ~ 86.035 mm
Cyl 2: 86.028 ~ 86.040 mm
Cyl 3: 86.050 ~ 86.065 mm
Cyl 4: 86.029 ~ 86.060 mm

There is a big difference between cylinder 1 and 2 on one hand and cylinder 3 and 4 on the other. Questions:
1 is the difference a problem and should I look for possible causes? If so: what do I look for?
2 is a rebore of +0.2 sufficient?
3 I'll need to buy new +0.2 pistons. Do these always come with appropriate piston rings?
4 Haynes says that new pistons come with new gudgeon pins. But gudgeon pins come in two sizes (grade one and two). Which one do I need and how do I determine that?
5 In addition to question 4: should the replacement bush for the rod small end be in accordance with gudgeon-pin size and/or rod-end size??
6 Do I need to measure my pistons and rings? If I'm due for new ones it looks quite irrelevant...

Thanks for your help.

[FONT=Trebuchet MS, Verdana, Tahoma, Arial]<!-- google_ad_section_start -->Hi there, sounds like the project is going well. New pistons come with the rings and wrist pins. I believe the wrist pin class is an issue with how they fit in the piston, not in the rod. If the rod bushes look ok,
you should be fine. Consult your machinist about this.
Secondly, I take it from the bore that this is a 1300.
If so, I would use standard size 1500 pistons. They are 86.4mm and have deeper valve cutouts so that in the event of a timing belt problem, no damage will happen to the motor. I have done this a few times with no problems.. I have never measured the actual compression ratio, so I don't know how much it would change.. the motors always ran well, so I never worried about it. This may be cheaper and easier to find than oversize 1300 pistons. Good luck,
Steve<!-- google_ad_section_end -->

[FONT=Trebuchet MS, Verdana, Tahoma, Arial]<!-- google_ad_section_start -->I have a lot of questions left while tearing the engine apart. For starters: the distributor doesn't have a vacume advance on it while the book says it should have one. I only have the giro-advance. But the PO used a few non-stock springs on the giro mechanism.

Is my distributor OK (it doesn't look like it ever used a vacume-advance)? How can I get new springs?

Thanks for your support

I know of NONE in Miami... but shipping within the US is probably the least of your worries!

As for your distributor... when I was building drag race motors we would eliminate the vacuum advance (cause we may not have a vacuum...) and re-curved the distributor for a full, and earlier arriving, CENTRIFICAL advance.

Usually done with a kit or some one knowledgeable and a SUN distributor tester.

Sounds like some one may have swapped out a racing version or re-did that one.

Does it have points? If so, you may wanna upgrade to a new distributor with an electronic ignition. IAP has some fair prices.

If you do use the "stocker", then you will wanna insure you set it to 10 degrees at idle and hopefully it will advance to about 30 - 35 degrees at about 3500. You can easily degree you own crank pulley by marking it yourself using the 5 and 10 degree marks as measuring guides. Remove the RR tire and poke your timing light in the wheelwell... this trick compliments of GILLES!

Makes sense. See if I got this right.

Scribe a line on the crank pulley *INDEX at 30deg BTDC, hook the light up to cylinder4, run up to 3k-3.5k RPM, and witness the cast pointer on the pulley stablilizing and corresponding to the INDEX plate at 30 deg BTDC.

* Probably have to fab an extension to the index plate (it only has three vee notches), or scribe a line on the block casing at 30 deg BTDC.

Thoughts Tony ?

No, I mean about this issue. : )

Out for now,

Tony,
Need to revise my first reply. The same can be accomplished if the line is scribed on the pulley clockwise past its pointer 30 degrees, right ?

Match that line with zero on the index plate (rightmost vee notch ).

Sure glad I went back and read this one before I answered the first one.

One thing though... I timed offa #1 plug... closest to the right hand side of the car. I have heard of setting the CAM timing offa #4... but am I mistaken here to time the distributor offa #1?

It must be #4, right ? Dunno what #1 (rightmost jug) would show you.

Back to the timing belt replacement scenario....The pointer on the crank pulley and the pointer on the cam pulley are *"on" there respective indexes when the distributor rotor is pointing to number four.

So back to the timing issue...We are evaluating the relationship of the crank pointer to its index when number four approaches TDC and pops #4, right ?????

Please, correct me if I'm wrong here.

* The cam pulley is actually off its index by exactly 180 degrees, but that's a different story that belongs in the timing belt changing section. HA !

YES, Temporarily crimping the vacuum advance line on the distributor for kicks sounds like something I will try. Thanks for recommending this.

Looked at the Haynes manual again last night and indeed Tony is correct in hooking the strobe to number one; and as you have pointed out, number four will work also.

So now I'll have to scratch my head AGAIN and look at the shape of the crank and the firing order. lololololololo

I'm assuming number one and number four both fire with the pulley crank to its index being "on" BUT Number one and four is X amount of strokes different. Obviously. : )

I don't know where it is WRITTEN (except on this site) ever to reference the distributor when setting the CAM timing.

I always line up the CAM index and the CRANK index... and I guess the AUX pulley index... which should care for the ditributor... but I have never removed the cap.

I would SUSPECT that this would all be TDC and #1 should be firing!!! not #4.

Now if I remember correctly... the firing order is 1432 or 1423... but its 14... something... and even at half speed on the crank... would it still not throw the sync pulse off 45 degrees?

Do I haveta go out to the garage and PROVE this??? Can't we solve this at the keyboard w/o getting our hands dirty???

Yep, the rotor should point to number 4 when timing the cam for belt replacement. [HAYNES]

Ignoring the distributer would be all fine and dandy if one was absolutely sure the distributor shaft was not rotated during the belt replacement process.

I was awkward enough during my first belt change that the auxilliary pulley spun the distributer shaft round, and roud, and round, till I didn't know where the rotor was pointing to !

I knew that the pistons where where they should be (crank), and the cam was rotated where it should be (cam), but didn't know if the distributer was going to deliver fire when/where it should.

Now...what's this about valve shims. I'm a rookie, remember ?

So what typically wears ? Do the disks begin dishing or cupping ?

Looked at mine through the oil fill hole on the cover when installing the timing belt and noticed they are a polished little disk that looked optically flat.

On the STP issue....ahh, hmmm, ahhh, ok...heck, might as well turn the radio up too !! : )

out for now,

[FONT=Trebuchet MS, Verdana, Tahoma, Arial]<!-- google_ad_section_start -->... just like you ain't no real virgin, either!

They screwed us with this little design quirk too!

One of the Steve's said he had to pick and use a magnet and prayed a lot just to get them out...

Then he calculates what value SHOULD be in there... and if ya changed a head gasket, its even more complicated.

I would IMAGINE they would cup... mine haven't, neither have yours, apparently. Are they making noise?

Mine do a bit on start-up... but as the engine heats up, I swear, not a click! (No glass, no hood baffle!)

HA!

I really do like Castrol, but lately have been using Q-State 20-50 and it has been the quietest!

As fer the radio... mine is polluting the state with all 10 watts of power (per 3" speaker) and with country music, and I can out sing them all!

(You may NOT want to challenge me on this...)

Ha!
